Some of us work for a living ya dirty trucker Glad she's sorted Sumaiya. And if by * you mean "incredibly hot body that's out of this world"...erm... Mickey there's no way to plug an ordinary harddrive into a PC without either opening the PC or getting some extra kit. The extra kit would be an external harddrive kit, which is basically a box to put the drive into and some alectronic gubbins that allows you to plug it into USB or firewire. Your best bet would be to put it into your harddrive temporarily. If you don't have network cards/sockets in both PCs then using a flash drive would be ok, or writing to a CD or DVD if you have a burner. Beware of viruses of course. Even if her drive is infected you should be safe as long as you make sure not to boot from her drive, don't run anything that's on her drive and don't copy anything from her drive onto your PC. The last one is just in case you later ran something you'd copied. It's a bit crap that she can't open the case without invalidating the warranty, opening PCs for upgrading etc is normal! I haven't forgotten you Angelus. I'll have to refresh my memory on Internet Explorer as I don't really use it much these days

I installed Firefox recently, but it feels really weird using it because I'm so used to IE.

Someone mentioned Firefox was good before, but Im too scared to get it. I don't understand computers and stuff always goes wrong with me. My address bar went away once too, well after my mum had been on the computer. Couldnt get it back, it reappeared after a while though. Dude I drive trucks all day, I make an effort to get on here.

Yeah, I thought that. I mean, everybody takes their computer apart. How else do you find out how it works?

Ok I had a little play with IE and the only way I managed to totally lose the address thingy was to untick it in the list. I did however manage to get rid of the textbox and just have the word "Address" left showing, do you have that Angelus? If not then it'd help if you sent me a screenshot. Pressing the "Prt Scr" key, generally just above trhe "Home" key, takes a screenshot and copies it to the clipboard. If you're using an ordinary e-mail program, like Outlook for example, then you can create a new message, click in it and paste it in there (using CTRL+V or whatever). If you're using web-based mail like Hotmail then you'll have to save the picture to a file and then attach it to the e-mail. The easiest way to do this is to open Paint (Start-All Programs-Accessories-Paint), press CTRL+V and then save it. In the meantime you can add an address bar to your Windows XP taskbar (the one all your open programs show up on). Right-click on it, click Toolbars and tick Address. You may need to unlock the taskbar so that you can get it where you want it. Type an address into that and press enter and the page will open in IE.

You can install Firefox and IE still works. quote: Dude I drive trucks all day, I make an effort to get on here.
Yeah but some of us do more than block motorways for a living I'm even more mad-busy than usual recently, big ol' deadline. You should count yourself lucky that I've taken time from my hectic schedule to share in a little social intercourse around here

That's how you get to grips with computers. When I got my first one I was pretty fearless, totally stuffed it up several times and worked out how to un-stuff it each time. That's how I learned. I can't believe how long it was until I had internet access, I think it was three or four years. Nowadays the computer's pretty useless without it.

That's a common problem and there's a common solution. But you know the rules, you have to ask before I can tell you it

Gah. I hate Firefox. And Netscape. And everything that isn't IE. When I started my website, it looked fine on both IE and Netscape (I had them both then). Computer brainstorm lost me Netscape, and I forgot about it. Years later, looked at my website on somebody else's computer, which was set up for a far more recent version of Netscape, and the website was virtual gobbledegook. I shudder to think what it looks like in other browsers. When did the damned lingo change so much?! Serves me right for doing it all the old fashioned way, I guess, and typing all the html code in myself. I probably ought to use a program, that might sort out the cross-browser collywobbles. But I like doing it my way. Fortunately, according to my whatnot page stats, about 98% of visitors are using IE, so I guess I don't need to worry. The perfectionist in me quakes at the thought of anybody anywhere using anything that isn't IE though.

Yeah right, and then I'll see a police helicopter That was "and pigs might fly" by the way Ok, you're going to have to do exactly what I tell you. I know you'll find it difficult but do your best And this may not be the problem as you don't tend to get this problem as much these days, but it's a reasonably good bet. First a question: are you running Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98SE, Windows 98, Windows 95 Windows 3.1, Dos 6.2? You only need to pick one

Hmm, not sure, never had a laptop. We can try this anyway, if only to get you used to doing what I say Ok, here goes: Open up Windows Explorer. In the left-hand pane (with all the folders and stuff) go to the top, right-click on "My Computer" and click "Properties". That should open up a window called "System Properties". Go to the Hardware tab and click on the "Device Manager" button. That should open up a window called "Device Manager". Find the bit that says "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and open it up. Now there are two entries under that that we're interested in, one for Primary IDE Channel and one for Secondary | |
