Well I tend to stick to safe stuff until people get to know me better.

Also if you're poker-faced then those who don't know you will take you seriously. try smiling, grinning or winking Wink

Oh I have an actual technical question. Ive got a replacement laptop cos the keyboard is a bit funky on this one but Ive got no net on it yet. Ive lost the installation disc I used to put net on this comp but although my new laptop is wireless enabled(I think) I havent got a router thing. But Im going back to uni on sunday anyway so may just be best till I get there and set my net up. With routers do you just buy any one and stick it on one comp or what? I know nothing.

Oops sorry, must have missed that one.

It's interesting that people so often manage fine by themselves. Often find that at work; a developer at a client messages me for help, I'm in a meeting or summat, and by the time I'm out they've sorted it out for themselves. Do you reckon I should always wait an hour or so before answering? Wink

Bug, I have a router related problem if you (or anyone else) can help.

My net was working fine last term but since I have come back I can get on to our network- it says it is connected and the signal is strong but my internet just doesn't work. My flatmates is working fine still. And I got onto another open network from my flat so it seems to be a router thing?

Stuffs can get dead bunged up with dust, though. I had a modem pack up altogether once because it was full of dust. Do live in a pretty dusty place, mind. Nowadays I take the computer apart every few months and give it a good vaccuuming out. Amazing how much gunk there can be inside the casing.

Very hard to diagnose without seeing it really. It's possible that it's connecting to the wrong router, have you checked that?

Presumably you connected your laptop to the net when you were at home, perhaps that's what's confusing it. Could be worth looking in your "Network Connections" folder and seeing if anything looks odd. If not then see if your home connection appears there. If it does then right-click on it and select Disable, just in case your poot's trying to use that.

I don't think it would be dust, cos my flatmate is connecting to it fine.
How can I check if its connecting with the wrong router? Our network has a name and it says it is connected to that network but then it just doesn't do anything.
I didn't use the net on my laptop at home because I have another comp there and no wireless.
Technology angers me.

What connections do you have in the Network Connections folder? (Control Panel - Network Connections)

ahh.....

here it is.

The ask bug technical thread!!

Dear Bug...

I have a question/problem.

My router has suddenly become password protected to access it. I didn`t install a password, and no-one else in the house knows anythng about it either. (we`re currently sending nasty thoughts at our not so friendly neighbours - we think, as they possessed an identical router, that they may have installed as password on the wrong router - if that`s even possible)

What would happen if I should buy another Belkin 54 router to replace the one I have? would the passwords still be in control, or would they be clear on a new router?

Would it be better if I phoned Belkin up and asked if they could remotely remove the password, is that possible? or what about taking the harddrive to somewhere like PC world, would they be able to disable the password??

What`s your best option to get around this?
