Blimey, this is a blast from the past. Didn't nat keep hijacking it? Big Grin

Most routers have a reset button. You might find a little hole on the bottom of the router, possibly labelled Reset. Stick a pin in there and that'll resert all the router settings, including the password.

You'll have to set the router up again afterwards, but that's no different to buying a new router.

Yes it's possible that your neighbours are using your router rather than theirs, deliberately or mistakenly. The activity lights on the router might give you a clue.

Good luck Smile

They can`t use my router now, because it`s been unplugged from my PC, so it`s not connected up to the internet.

I assume that the password that`s been installed on it was the reason why I kept losing my internet connection.

NTL, when I kept phoning them with non internet connection, just kept telling me to disconnect the modem. AS far as they were concerned that was the end of the problem. Not exactly helpful.

When I phoned up their accessary shop thingy, they were selling the exact same router as I already had. But they also advised that the routers that were compatable with my modem was not the one they sold. Which I found very strange, seeing as they supplied me with the broadband modem in the first place. You`d think that they would supply routers that were actually compatable with their modems.

A quick check of my router shows no sign of a reset button. So I`ll give Belkin a ring in the morning, and ask for their help.

What`s the difference between a Buffalo Router WYR G54, and a Buffalo Router WBR G54?

Y? Razz

They look different, both look to have been discontinued, the Y one isn't even on the Buffalo website.

What model router do you have right now?

The password wouldn't cause intermittent connection problems. It's possible you got disconnected when your neighbours rebooted the router, but it's unlikely.

It's more likely just a problem with the router. From what I've read most wireless routers have intermittent connection problems.

How can you tell from the activity lights? What do they do when someone is leeching your connection?

Hi btw Cool

I think it measn that when the router is being used, as in people are online thru it, that the lights flash differently than when it`s at rest. So if the lights show that it`s being used, and no-one here is online, then it`s safe to assume that someone else is using the router.

Bug, I phoned up Belkin in the end. He was Indian, with a really strong accent, so I had my son speak to him as I couldn`t really understand him fully. After pulling out several wires, and reconnecting one thing at a time, we got the belkin working and with me still online. Despite me telling the man that the connection usually only lasts for a short time, once the connection was made he told us we were "all set now". This was even before my son could boot up his laptop to see if he could get online. The man terminated the call.

Of course, all I predicted would happen, happenned. My son couldn`t get online, and after 15 mins I was cut off as well.

The call to belkin was a complete waste of time. Bloody good job it was an 0800 number, as had I been paying for the call I would be furious, as it is I`m not particularly happy, but at least it didn`t actualy cost me anything except 30 mins of my time. Mad Mad

Hi Bug

I need your help. I am a wireless virgin. I have bought and successfully connected to my computer a Netgear ADSL2+ MODEM ROUTER DG834.

Now how do I get my laptop connected so I can us the internet on it. It is wireless enabled. But when I click the two little computers sign it says you are not connected to any network. How do I get the wireless active and the internet up and running? The laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens LI1718-VARIO030 .

Many Thanks

Hi Sumaiya; it's nice to be needed Wink

Much as I'd like to take your wireless cherry your best bet is to follow the instructions that come with the modem/router. Pick the ones for your operating system and it should take you through the process with pictures, which is more than I could do.

To start with I'd connect to the router using a network cable (hopefully one came with the router). This will allow you to access the modem configuration page using Internet Explorer (should be at http://192.168.0.1/ ). Once you've able to get to the internet you can try connecting wirelessly, and once that's working set up the wireless security.

You should definitely set up your router using WPA encryption, and the instructions should tell you how to do that too. This will stop other people using your connection and potentially accessing your computer. However don't set up the encryption until you're able to connect wirelessly, cos otherwise you won't know if you can't conenct because of the security or something else.

Also be sure to set a password for that router configuration thingy.

If you need any help let me know; I'll need to know what operating system you're using (probably Windows XP).

Have fun Smile

Good luck Sumaiya! I set up security encryption on my laptop all by myself, so it's not hard. Smile

That's three posts in one day that have been deleted with no explanation. Time to take it further.

Of course it would help if the "Contact Us" link at the forum did something more than taking me to a half-finished page that says "Your enquiry/issue has been received and will be handled within 7 Days." before I've even typed anything in!

Haha. Well Bug, if it's any consolation, I typed out a mammouth question for you the other day, or rather a question and then lots of background info, too me about 5 or 10 mins, and then when I clicked on 'Post Now' it came up with error, and I'd lost it. Needless to say I was not impressed. Not only that, but I haven't been able to post over the last few days, it's stopped me again. Mad

Ok Bug, I'll try to ask my question again, see if it works. It is a computer question and you might not know the answer which is fine, as I can continue to use the computers at uni, but....

My internet isn't working. We have wireless thing in our house. I have a US Robotics card thing which is working, I have tried deleting and reinstalling but that doesn't seem to work. Basically it seems to be 'searching' for the network when the Windows Zero Configuration thing is up, but every time that comes up I have to re-enter the username and password. It doesn't seem to save it (which I think is the problem). It is mightly annoying as when I enter the password into that, it seems to go through the motions of connecting and then at the last minute goes from - Aquiring network address, or something - to connect to it. I know this might seem a little confusing and I'm sorry but I don't know correct terms for stuff. Red Face Disappointed

Anyway I can use the net at uni so it's not the end of the world, it's just that it would be nice to use it in my room. I had a similar problem last year, but then my housemate's friend came and did something and it worked. I do not, however, know what they did. Also I think it is something very simple and I think it involves getting both the wiress card and Windows Zero Config to do the same thing. I think I need the Windows thing to store my password, trouble is I dunno how.

Hi Doc. Well with me it's not that I'm getting an error, it's that our friendly neighbourhood moderator keeps deleting my posts, and once even an entire thread.

Anyway I've lodged a complaint and hopefully they'll take it seriously. It's getting to the point where I'll just go somewhere else if they don't.

I think WZC only remembers your password once it manages to successfully connect, so ifit's not manageing to connect that would explain why you keep having to re-enter it.

The most likely reason for it not connecting is encryption. The router could be using WEP or WPA (WPA is far better). In order to connect your computer needs to have the right pass key.

If you don't know it then you need someone to go to the router's configuration page from their PC (someone who's already able to connect of course) and look it up.

How to get to that page will depend on the brand of router, but they'll get to it from their web browser. If you get stuck with that I can probably help.

If WZC still gives you trouble then you could look to see if there's software for your US Robotics card. It may have the same problem, but at least it might give you a useful error message.

Let me know how it goes Smile

Thanks I will try that. I use WPA. Is there a particular page wher eI need to enter the encryption key?

I will ask one of my housemates if they have the right pass key and see how that works. Thanks.

To be honest I can't remember; it's a long time since I used WZC to set up a wireless connection. I think it should ask you for the key when it realises that the connection's encrypted.
