I am 29 and a bit - I haven't really seen much of Dr. Who pre-Sylvester so its purely a nostagia thing for me. If I saw some of the other series I may well change my mind - who knows!

Because that may explain why you think SM was a good Dr. i.e. he was the Dr when you were young. Put it this way I have never met anyone who thought he was any good who was older and I think that was reflected in the fact the BBC pulled the whole thing after him.

So that goes along with my last statement too.

I know a good many people in their thirties, forties and above who rate Sylv very highly. He suffered from being the Doctor at a time when the Beeb didn't give a toss about the show. It was underfunded and undersupported, but at no time was that his fault. He did some sterling work, particularly in his final season, and this has since been more than improved upon in his work for Big Finish, with the Who audio plays. Most diehard Who fans have a lot of respect for Sylvester McCoy, even if they're not that fond of some of his TV adventures. The axing of the show was nothing to do with his performance or portrayal - indeed, the character of the Seventh Doctor went on to be the star of the Virgin New Adventures, written by fans for fans. He's much loved. Not my favourite, but not to be lightly dismissed.

Of the old stuff I prefer Sylvester McCoy, and Ace. I dislike both the Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee eras. Both camped up the charactor dreadfully. I like the new stuff that RTD has done. So much so that both Chris Eccleston and David Tennant, in my opinion, are miles better.

What I find fascinating is that this thread was started, knocking the new compnaion, BEFORE her first episode even aired. In fact only my messages so far have been posted AFTER the show. So am I to assume that the naysayers of Martha Jones now cannot support their pre show views, but don`t have the decency to come back and apoligise?

Actually, Angelus, given how suddenly this thread began, and the fact that I don't recognise a lot of the names in it, I'm wondering if this thread began somewhere else, and was moved here by the mods on the grounds that this was a more appropriate setting for it? So maybe the other people in it now can't find it again?! (And wasn't Martha fab? ) Oh, and grrrr. Jon Pertwee was one of the best Doctors, so to you.

I just checked against their profiles. The thread probably started in Channel 4 News forum. Yes, I liked Martha. I also liked her dysfunctional family. Jon Pertwee the best Doctor???? What did Doctor 2 call him? Fancy Pants. Jon was camper than John Inman.

I also remember people whinging about casting John Barrowman as a Companion. Calling it a complete disaster Seems to me it was the opposite of a disaster. Certainly catapulted John straight to stardom, and didn`t affect the ratings. Probably increased them actually, I reckon.

Why( reading the beginning of those threads) isn't Doctor Who seen as a great tv programme with the universal appeal, I like to think that the young kids have a hero and his companion that they can learn from and aspire too ( how many doctors or scientists in years from today, siad they took that route cos they were inspired by David Tannant or Chris Eccleston, Was there many heros (apart from Buffy in the 90's) for the kids. Let them have the heroes please. *Momma of the A team thread.* ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥.. We beat together... We are now on the run we have been discovered... Critical adorer of the Captain and the Scam Artist ♥♥

I think the new assistant will turn out okay. The only problem is, can the BBC continue supporting Doctor Who, or will the anti-scifi brigade stop it ? There have been rumours that the costs for SFX have had to be reduced, so other things may follow. So far, this series has been great - its been exciting and amusing, and much better than the previous series (which was generally just boring). This is my first post in a year here...
