Picked up some cheap second hand DVDs from a market of the first twenty odd episodes of the Next Generation. I've never been a Star trek fan as such, which is to say I've never watched it regularly, but I have typically tended to watch episodes or movies of the show if they are on.

Thus I was qite familiar with the concept and the characters when I sat down to watch these first episodes. I'm finding it quite a dynamic and surprising experience. The first feature length pilot in particular is a thrilling piece of military science fiction, with Patrick Stewart's commanding presence forming a hub for endless dynamism.

It actually rather reminded me of the new Battlestar Galactica in terms of atmosphere, character and ethos!

Anybody got any memories they'd like to share?

Captain Picard has compelling eyes.

Once Data settles down, he`s very funny.

Wasn`t too keen on William Ryker - when TNG first started I`d just finished watching the mini series "North and South" and Jonathan Frakes played a cowardly yankee, so I was comparing the two characters.

I did feel sorry for him after a while.

Picard hated him.... he was forever ordering everyone to "Fire at Will"

Picard`s hatred was so infectious, that soon I noticed every other show had the same order !!!

old joke. But I LOVE it!!

John Smith: So what am I then? Nothing. I`m just a story.

Doctor: You`re an echo. That`s all. A TimeLord is so much more. A sum of knowledge; a code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it`s gone now, all of it. Gone forever.
