The 4400 has been dropped after four seasons, the show's creator has confirmed.

The decision by the USA Network came on the back of a gradual ratings slide over the last two years.

Writing on The 4400's official messageboards, executive producer Scott Peters said: "We’ve had a great time bringing you this story and submersing you in the lives of all these incredible characters. But at least we got to go out with a bang! I wish we could go on forever, but the party has come to an end."

The broadcaster has also axed sci-fi series The Dead Zone after six seasons.

The axe falls on a couple more decent series.

Ah well, at least they managed to last more than half a season.

I only managed to see S1 (Sky3 Freeview). I may have to indulge in the DVDs at some point.

Channel Five treated The Dead Zone abysmally - much in the same way as they treated Angel.

It's no wonder I rarely bother getting into new series. So many series get axed with no tidy-up or resolution.

It doesn't seem to happen in other genres. I can't remember an author not actually finishing a series of books unless they were inconsiderate enough to die. Films tend to be self-contained, even films within trilogies.

Ok, so from now on we all make a pact that we don't start watching any new series. That'll force them to keep making the current ones and resurrect old ones. Yep, that'll work Wink

John Smith: So what am I then? Nothing. I`m just a story.

Doctor: You`re an echo. That`s all. A TimeLord is so much more. A sum of knowledge; a code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it`s gone now, all of it. Gone forever.

Has the 4400 got the fan base, or the creator, who is willing to take on the burocrats in the industry like Firefly had?

Although I like The 4400, I think it's right to bring down the curtain on it.

As long as they bring it to a natural end, then they will do it justice.

But they're not gonna, which is the problem. Season 4 ended, then came the announcement that the show has been axed and there won't be a season 5.

I guess it's possible they may tidy up the loose ends in a mini-series like they did with Farscape, but I don't think anything's been said about that.
