This is for people who want to know how he does his trickshow he does his tricks, discussions about them and learning more about the psychology behind them.
I'll start ot opf by pasting a thread written by '<Ferris>':
"Whether people study it or not, this dialogue continues between each and every one of us without any conscious perception of its existance by either party. That is however, with the exception of the students of this science of which Derren Brown is one of them.
Coupled with this non-verbal is a verbal communication which is woven into an innoxious dialogue. The easiest way to highlight this is to demonstrate it, so here is the dialogue of the 'Letter Choosing' scene with my observations:
Brown: I'm going to write down a letter of the alphabet.....and see if you can read my mind....see if you can see what it is...right? Don't try and guess! <Unaudible> you just got to listen to your mind...
Apart from the obvious audible dialogue of explanation... He is giving instructions by literally 'Writing them into the code.." (so to speak). Just as a computer virus is written into software... so Derren Brown gives his instructions to the girl's unconscious mind, written into the language.
Brown overlayed commentary: It looks psychic, but it's just language planting ideas. Watch it again and listen carefully!
The problem most people have at this point is understanding how on earth is it possible from such harmless words?%*!!? ...but this is how it works!
The unconscious mind doesn't miss a thing! especially when it is right infront of the eyes (Anyone who's ever heard their name mentioned in a crowded noisy room will attest to the monitoring nature of our unconscious). If a person is unobservant it is because they can't retrieve the information and not because the mind doesn't see it. Of all the information processed in a second by the unconscious, less than 1% is actually reported to the conscious mind. So whatever Derren Brown says or does (body movements NVC) will be picked up by the girl without her consciously being aware of it.
This is just prep work for later, and in and of itself is as harmless as saying "Boo!"
Ok, now the fun starts...
Brown: So I'm going to write one letter....Mmmmmmm..hmm! Ok! Alright, hold out your hand! You've got no idea what that is? didn't you! You couldn't see what I was writing with the...er <Draws the letter M in the air> ok...great.
And I've put a little line underneath so we know which way up it is, alright? Take just a step forward for me. Hold your hand flat. Look at me! As I talk to you letter of the alphabet? huhm? ...when just should just be popping into your mind as I talk to you...alright? Say what comes to mind now! what letter were you thinking of?
Girl: M
Brown: M? M for mother? Have a look!
No, I haven't transcribed it incorrectly, that is what he actually says! (As disjointed and scrambled as it may sound.)
What is going on here is he's creating confusion in the mind. He first does this when he asks her a question: "You've got no idea what that is?" immediately followed by an accusing "Didn't you!". Which makes absolutely no sense! (Almost as though she has blanked out for a second and missed part of the conversation...) which has the affect of confusing the mind.
This confusion is a tool of hypnosis and is designed to put the person into an altered state. It's not a freaky tranced-out state as is often depicted, but more like the alpha state induced by television when engrossed in a program. It is no coincidence that immediately after inducing this heightened perceptive state he then signs the letter M in the air (virtually unnoticeable), while saying "You couldn't see what I was writing" which actually means the opposite "See what I'm writing!". Since telling someone not to notice something that they previously hadn't noticed equates to bringing their attention to it...
The last thing Derren Brown wants at this point is for the girl's free-thinking consciousness to pick one of 26 letters of the alphabet. What he wants is for the girl to use the letter that Brown is sure by now that she has seen him write... So in the second paragraph he then goes into hyper-babble by talking in spliced together sentences - again to induce confusion - and if everything goes well the letter at the forefront of her mind will be M.
The clever bit was getting her to listen to her mind! And this was done by inducing the altered state of confusion.
His skill at making it sound like part of the sentence has been removed is truly amazing, and he often uses this technique."
You can see some nice clips by searching "Derren Brown" in www.*********** but I don't think the clip explained above is there.
Yeah, i think it's definitely an interesting topic. I'v been to so many forums and websites [including the DB website forum], and there's just not enough information on the 'How does he do it?' type of thing. There ar even people who'd rather not know how he does it.
Hope fully we'll get some good posts here and find out about how Derren does it and how the mind works in relation to his tricks.

PS, the link is: you tube dot com
The less you know how his tricks are done, the more you are likely to watch the shows in an attempt to see through the tricks. And high viewing figures means Derren get paid lots of money
I`ve caught a couple of his tricks on TV, and basically all he is doing is making a fool out of his victims. That`s not what I call "entertainment" at all.
******************************** John Smith: So what am I then? Nothing. I`m just a story.
Doctor: You`re an echo. That`s all. A TimeLord is so much more. A sum of knowledge; a code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it`s gone now, all of it. Gone forever.
Personally, I'd still always watch his shows even if I knew how he did the tricks. Knowing the tricks for me doesn't put me off wathcing the shows again.
Having read every comment in this forum - it is pretty obvious that nearly all of you, especially the more 'scientific' ones - are doing exactly what Derren does - you are communicating, what you want to communicate, and getting people to respond, even if you have annoyed them - you are all using the same linguistic (we can't use the non verbal)tricks that man has practised since the beginning of language and communication.
Although I've studied psychology to PhD and body language to the nth degree, I don't use any jargon or try any clever talk - Derren has hooked all of us, like it or not, or none of us would be on this forum - and whether that is because we are in denial, afraid, disbelieving, passionate about him - whatever - we all are fascinated by him.
He is simply a master of all those verbal and non verbal rites that any student of psychology will know about, except that he's chosen to weave those through a pattern of illusion that is merely aimed at entertaining, catching our imagination, and yes, thus, making an interesting programme and for him, a good living.
By the way, Robbie Williams with the needle through the arm last night - I did see a kind of fake skin colored plastic 'muscle' where the needle went through - and there was blood - although I believe it was fake blood, just to make us go 'Ugh'. Heighten the illusion, and instantly connect with the ghouls that lurk within us.
Fascinating man, fascinating viewing, but like all things, not to be taken too seriously.
YM, I really think that you in the wrong place to find out such things, i'm sure there are a thousand places where you can find and disscus in depth with people who know about these things..............it sounds to me that you are really interested, have you tried all the magician type sites, i came accross a few by just googling him.
Member no.3 of the official Russell Brand ball bag fan club.
But I spent around 3 days googling and have been to many many forums but just couldn't find what I was after. Many 'magic' sites want money, and from what I experienced the forums didn't hold what I was looking for.
I came here recently, and with som any pages of replies and people discussing things openly, I thought this would be the closest I'd get to finding out more.

You have me wrong.
I am NOT fascinated by him. Ask any long term fans of his in the main Derren Brown thread.
I can`t stand the bloke, or his trade.
And as I said in my other post, making a fool of someone is not my idea of entertainment.
AS to being able to find out how his tricks are done. People will have to work it out for themselves, because disclosing the secrets of how magic tricks are done is agianst the Magicians Guild "Laws", and lawbreakers can be expelled from the guild and lose their licence to practice magic.
As to only being in this forum because of Darren Brown, what a load of tosh. I`ve been here for at least 7 years, far longer than the current forum set up.

It's funny you say you've been on this forum for at least seven years, when on your profile, it states the date you registered was 09-08-02, not even four years ago! Yeah and it is a load of tosh, every word that comes out of your mouth.
If you aren't fascinated with DB and you can't stand him or his trade, what are you doing on here? This place is meant to be for DB fans, generally! If all you can do is slag off DB, then perhaps you should do it somewhere else. DB is not making a fool of anyone, he is simply but honestly trying to open our eyes to all the con artists and fakes out there, who can just as easily fool us into believing in something that's not true. That is the point that he has quite clearly made, even if you can't see it.

It fascinates me.
Some may like to see David Blaines illusion, pulling out his heart on live tv, or cutting off his ear
