Yes I have to agree 110% with the above posting. I wrote Galloway off for his big bro nonsense but his passionate views were enough for me to get off my chair and stand in front of the screen. His knowledge and understanding of Cuba's situation is completely true and is sympathetic to a very important cause. What has been achieved in Cuba is remarkable considering it's close proximity to the ever increasing bloody tenticles of the US and stands as example to anyone who beleives in the potential for the human race to live in a state that is not nearly one third as destructive as ours. We could see even from this channels extremely pathetic report that Cuban people were deeply shocked by the news of Castro's retirement. And if I see George about I'd be the first to pat his back and offer him a fine Cuban cigar...
Couldn't agree with you more. I am absolutely appaled at the way this story has been covered by the British media and in particular by Krishnan Guru Murphy's shockingly uninformed report this evening. Thank you George Galloway for saving the day. Channel 4 should be ashamed.
You didn't think he looked really, really tired and a bit drunk? Or you didn't question why he wanted to do his piece from a bar? He was spot on about the suspension of democracy here during the war, making C4 look stupid. But other than that, he was doing what he does best...cheerleading a dictator and sweeping aside human rights as inferior to strong government that stands up to the USA.
Most Cubans don't live in Cuba. There's a reason for that!
'...when it comes to Castro, useful idiots have never been in short supply. From Norman Mailer to Jean-Paul Sartre, from Jesse Jackson to Ted Turner, a long line of admirers has swooned over the bearded tyrant, lavishly praising his wisdom and charm - and never showing the slightest interest in his real record: cruelty, repression, and a death toll in the tens of thousands.'
"The Castro regime executed more people in just its first three years than the Pinochet regime killed or 'disappeared' in its entire 17 years in power,"... "Yet Castro's victims, who number so many times more - and who include not just political opponents but entire families assassinated for trying to flee - remain unknown, ignored, or forgotten.

From my link given earlier: 'But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Werlau and the archive's research director, Armando Lago, an economist who has spent years analyzing the costs of the Cuban revolution, expect the total number of deaths to be far higher. As many as 77,000 Cubans may have lost their lives trying to escape the island; their deaths, too, will eventually be added to the archive.'

Quite a few useful idiots on the board tonight, by all accounts.
Hahahhahahahahaha! Oh my sore sides.

George Bush and Tony Blair have much more credibility for honesty. They have no links to the Cuban Truth Project? Here's a thought, what if the USA removes it's illegal, cruel and unfair sanctions, do you think Cuba would have been such a bad place to live? I think little will change until the USA undergoes some extreme regime change which just may be quite soon.

No two wrong don’t make one right, and I never implied that it did. I was pointing out the obvious error that even the dubious figure of 9,240 is nowhere near 35,000, as was being claimed.
As far 77,000, I guess any unsubstantiated wild number with lots of zeros sounds impressive!

And what's the body count for your hero Dubya?
I was against the war in Iraq, I still am against the war in Iraq, and have posted to that effect many times on this board - as you would know, if you paid any attention to posts other than your own. I note that neither you nor the other Castro-lovers on the board have refuted any of the figures given in my link. Perhaps the truth hurts too much? Or maybe your minds are made up, and unpalatable facts serve only to confuse?

Well the problem seems to be is how true is this Truth ?!
Anti-Castro groups are infamous fronts for CIA propaganda, who actually sponsor (if not actually run) nearly all of them. This Maria Werlau doesn’t sound that convincing;
“When asked by journalists how many have been killed in the name of the Cuban revolution, she could only respond with an approximation of “I am not sure, 100,000… 200,000…”
Seems to make numbers up depending on what day it is !!
Read about all the other unbelievable horror stories, with the emphasis being on the unbelievable;

you know that most Cubans were unaware of Castro's announcement because it was on the internet, and apparently, Cubans are not allowed internet in their homes, only their workplace (so the sites they visit can be tracked).
What a fine example of freedom and progressivism Cuban is.

why is it illegal for America to refuse to trade with one country? Surely America can trade with whoever she wants.
Doesn't stop the EU doing 2.5 billion Euros worth of trade with cuba every year though. In fact US sanctions were eased in 2000 to allow exports of agricultural products and medicines from the US and America is now Cuba's biggest supplier of food and it's fourth largest trading partner (after the EU, China and Canada).
Both Amnesty and HRW remain critical of Cuba's human rights record, detention without trial and the violent intimidation of opposition supporters is still common.
