I would guess that there is a Social Services investigation going on and until some assessment is made about the domestic situation the child will not be allowed home.

Bearing in mind the public nature of the events Social Services dare not be seen to be in any way negligent in the event of something further happening either with this child or someone else in the family.

To say that she should not go back just because the family is dysfunctional is just patronising middle class values. There are scores of families more or less dysfunctional than this one and not all of them are on poor council estates.

I wouldn't say she should or shouldn't go back because the documentary didn't provide the sort of evidence needed to make that decision.

Precisely. These programmes seem to be made to satisfy the public's need to 'lynch'.

You cannot come on this thread, well OK, only for 5 mins.

I am terribly sorry Miss, I could stand the cringe factor anymore!

I turned off at the point where they threw out the Mirror jurno because he didn't want to be filmed.

I really feel sorry for kiddies who are in the same position as Shannon.

The evidential value of the program is approaching zero.

All the people who saw it got were the edited highlights of what the editors wanted to show.

Sad case this Crying

The thing is though Dave, they don't feel sorry for themselves in the way that the outsider might do. They don't find the dysfunctional nature of the family at all disconcerting. They only feel bad about it if there is some individual they have a bad relationship with.

Well if they are only nine they probably won't know any different lifestyle.

The key piece of evidence I have heard is the statement that Shannon walked in the opersite direction to home of her own free will apparently.

She might have been going to see a friend.

She might have rowed with her mother over a new pair of trainers.

She might have said she was going to run away because her mother had told her off for something.

When kids are 9, their worries are not those of adults, nor should adults speculate about what was in a 9 year olds mind when an adult can seldom remember what it's like to be 9. The only person I know who has done this successfully is Roald Dahl.

Yes ........but she still isn't back with her family. Why do you suppose that is? Having watched the programme that her fame hungry parents willingly consented to it's really no surprise. All I can say is ...........that poor child.

Actually I can very well remember what it was like to be nine years old. i may not have the skills od Roald Dahl to write it down but I remember it vividly. Honestly I do.

I know she's not home, and I don't think it does any good trying to second guess the police.

I can't remember another case like this one so I've no idea what's supposed to happen.

Maybe because a member of the extended family is involved.................AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH Shut up DL!! You're speculating and that gets no one anywhere Laugh Laugh Laugh

According to a report in the Sunday Times, there was an ongoing Social Services investigation about her home circumstances before the girl's disappearance. Obviously this would not be part of any TV programme so it stands as evidence that the programme itself was a flawed picture.

She is not unique. That is perhaps the most important point. Only because she disappeared has her background come to light and there are lots of children with similar backgrounds. Not all of them live on council estates in the West Riding but we are inclined to pontificate less about their dysfunctional family lives because they are more suburban.

Unfortunately council estates are full up with lots of Shannon's...

There are lots of women with kids by lots of different fathers. The fact is the council estates have a much bigger ratio than suburbia...

Do they really Dave? Or is it just that people in suburbia are better at hiding the fact? I have worked on council estates for 30 odd years while living in suburbia and I can tell you there are plenty of Ulrika Jonssons around in the leafy semi-detached. Wink

I was brought up on a council scheme and there were no multi dads, that we were aware of. It is a myth to think that no family dysfunction exists in suburbia.

I agree. The problem is that the dysfunction is harder to hide on a council estate with low incomes and a distrust of authority. Your suburban multi-parent family finds it a lot easier to obtain decent housing and schooling and to buy off their children. So we don't see such public results.

Nobodys home is perfect .....it's pretty obvious they were going to be criticised whatever their circumstances. Why put yourselves up for it?

Maybe they thought it would help in some way.

Do you really think so? It was obviously agreed it was to be shown after Shannon was found one way or another. Do you not think they simply wanted to have their faces on the telly? I know I'm being un PC but ..........come on - what other reason was there.

You mean their 15 mins of fame? Yes, quite likely, but when you don't have much...

you know, that might be nearer the truth than you really know; but there is far too much of this rubbish on tv -'weeping ' parents boyfriends g/fs - who have actually committed the crime - so the appeal - for me - has gone .

Maybe we don't see the results in public, but I see them in my school-a nice middle class kids-from-'good-homes' school Frown
