Pc convicted of assaulting child

He told the judge the boy had intimidated him, the boy had been drinking in the childrens home and then got aggressive with staff.

The boy while at the police station claimed he had a gun, and police officer Daniel Gaffney took him off to be strip-searched, thats unusal not to have another memember of staff to go along, he was assualted while he was strip search took place, if he lived in a childrens home shoul'nt a memeber of staff accompanied him to the police station so could be present uring the search. The case has been adjourned until 27 August 2008 for pre-sentence reports. He is also due to face a police disciplinary hearing.the judges comment "He lies to his federation representative, he lies to the inspector and he lies to the police surgeon called out to examine him."

I wonder will they sack the him at the police disciplinary hearing

quote:
Pc Daniel Gaffney, 30, of Greater Manchester Police, admitted punching the boy, but said he was acting in self-defence.
He had pleaded not guilty to assault, but Warrington magistrates rejected his defence claim. Gaffney attacked the boy in November last year at Didsbury police station after the boy was arrested. Gaffney claiming the boy fell. A day later he admitted punching him with a force equivalent to seven or eight out of 10, he said, bursting the boy's nose

Boy aged twelve gets drunk on vodka, gets aggressive with staff where he lives.

How did a boy aged twelve get hold of vodka in a children's home?

Not difficult to imagine what state he was in, or the desire by police to teach him a lesson.

But of course we are not allowed to do that today. It wasn't his fault he needed recourse to alcohol, and not his fault that he lost control of himself as a result. Not his fault that he abused staff looking after him.

Its all the police officer's fault. Well not quite. We are all guilty. Frown

But of course.

Trained adult police officer.

12 year old boy.

Perfectly normal for the former to complain about being "intimidated".

The boy was in the care of the state, unless he was a vistor to the childrens home they do not make that clear, does he come from a broken home how long has he been in the care of the state? has he been abused by adults as a child? has he been in and out of foster homes, has him being in the care of the state given him a nurturing loving home life? has the boy any mental health issues, did the officer know his medical history, had the boy experienced sexual abuse? it does not state the boy became aggrressive with the officer.

The last thing a drunk, disturbed disfunctional 12 yr old boy, being brought up by the state or any child for that matter, is a police officer, or any adult to punch a child with the force equivalent to seven or eight out of 10,policer officers words, bursting the boy's nose.

The police have a duty of responsible care for you while in custody. Has this officer any children of his own, if so I would think that the social services do some checks pronto!

The boy was arrested at a children's home in Wythenshawe after drinking vodka with a friend and threatening staff with a fence post.
Following the verdict IPCC Commissioner Naseem Malik said: "Pc Gaffney's actions were totally unacceptable.

"He is a highly trained police officer, yet he chose to resort to this type of violence against a 12-year-old boy.

"It is notable that Pc Gaffney's colleagues raised concerns about his actions and that should be commended."

I don't know where the police find the patience to be honest.

i must admit I feel quite guilty when I read this because when I read that the officer had punched the kid in the face I just thought "good".

i know it probably makes me a bad person but there you go.

who knows how long the officer held back?

the article states that the kid was pretending he had a gun, so who's to say he didn't threaten to come after the officer's family ?

I feel it's outrageous that the policeman has been jailed.

The youth in question had no doubt been taunting the policeman knowing full well that there was nothing the policeman could have done.

The policeman was right to punch the youth, it's just a shame he didn't punch him harder.

"The 12 year old, who cannot be named for legal reasons" - this is an example of where we are going wrong - name and shame these offenders and don't offer them anonymity.

If corporal punishment was still used in schools we'd read less of these violent youths.

No dount this 12 year old will turn into a murderer or a car theif - a waste of a human being.
