Can anyone think of any bad examples of canned laughter? You know, when something really isn't *that* funny but the laughter track suggests otherwise. (Even if it IS just the editors having a laugh.)
Ha ha. Yes, I see what you're both saying. But I actually meant standalone scenes/instances. I did have a bit of a list going in my head. But as you get older you forget these things!
Mostly in rubbish cheap films. But i guess that's how children learn what is supposed to be funny, laughing when other people laugh...I suppose you could put it on gardening shows and within a generation people would be wetting themselves to Ground Force.
I thought the laughter on Friends was because the audience had just been told that CH4 was repeating it ( yet again ) for the 157th time.
The CL on You've been framed is particularly bad, especially when the so called audience is wetting themselves laughing at a person falling over for the 126th time.

YES. I couldn't agree more. In fact, that's been a hate of mine for years. The whole programme really. But it, erm, escaped my mind at the time :-S

Oh yes, Friends is terrible. It's not at all funny that's why they have to put canned laughter in. Any time I am unfortunate enough to be watching an episode of the thing, I spend the whole time trying to work out what's funny. Incidently, even people who like it that I have watched it with don't laugh either.
I don't understand what's funny about someone walking in through a door and saying "hello" in an over-enthusiastic voice to the person already in the room. I remember seeing that sort of thing accompanied by lots of excessive laughter. I think it was followed by the person in the room saying "hello" back to them and then more raucous laughter.
Anyway, I know loads of people like the programme. Very strange.

Pretty much every American sitcom I can think of is terrible for canned laughter overload. Though Two Pints did it last series but they're toning it down more now. It's ironic cause for me the best comedies tend to be the ones without the laugh tracks (Ideal, Green Wing etc). Maybe because i resent being told when and what I should find funny
dinnerladies - my friend lent me the DVD and I couldn't get past the first episode due to OTT audience reaction. You could see Victoria Wood thinking "didn't mean for a laugh there"
I did watch it on terrestrial and loved it - wonder why I didn't notice it then *strokes chin*
Sorry to deviate against C4 here but what about "Canned clapping"? I'm referring to the Wednesday National Lottery draw broadcast. Do they expect me to believe that they drafted in 100 or so audience members to watch a live viewing of the lotto results, which takes less than 10-15 minutes?
I am tired, I am weary. I could sleep for a thousand years.

Canned laughter can be annoying if used to much, but in friends, the jokes are genuinly funny and I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds themselves laughing whenever the "audience" does.
my god, yeh Planets Funniest Animals! If i'm unfortunate enough to not find the remote in time and have to watch a bit of it, it makes me cringe! It would be bad enough without the fake laughter but it makes it even worse if thats possible!
