Thumbs like onions is such a great name. I have to say I've never heard that phrase...if it is indeed a phrase. However I have heard the phrase "face like a busted onion"

Someone i know is afflicted with thumbs that resemble said onions. Gloves and phones are a problem. By someone i know i mean someone entirely fictional.
