OMG what a brilliant film absolutely loved it ang lee has done himself proud heath and jake are have to be two of hollywoods rising stars without a doubt *****

I watched this film yesterday and the performances in it are excellent - Their story was just so sad and I cried at the end, it was very moving. I wished it'd ended differently though, with them finding some sort of happiness away from the prejudice and oppression but it wasn't to be why oh why does jakey have to die in so many films

one question though - was jack twist killed for being gay or was he just killed for the sake of it? it wasn't made very clear... or perhaps i just missed a bit?

Being gay definitely had something to do with it, Eskimo.(remember the story that Ennis told Jack earlier in the film - the guy who was killed after he settled down with another man and kept a quiet life?)

I think the author of the story leaves that question open to interpretation. If you've seen the movie you know that the "official" story as told by Jack's wife if that he was killed in accident changing a tire. Ennis, with the life he has lived and what he knows about the world pictures in his mind what this accident story really means. If you believe Ennis' interpretation, then he definitely died a violent death at the hands of people filled with hate. The alternative is that the wife's account is true.

I also thought it was open to interpretation.

the way I saw it was that ennis and the wife dont really know but the reanactment was to show us the viewers what the truth was??

but the way the wife told the story and reacted to Ennis was that the story she told was to keep face and that she knew it wasnt true,

I loved this film. I was slow off the mark and only watched it for the first time the other day, but it was so sad, I wept a soddin river at the end..
Fantastic acting from the lead two. It was so thoughfully written, simply a great love story..

depressing and dull is all i can say about bbm.........

Oscar material??!!!??? Yeah, right.

Then I thought about it more, and what else was there at the time? BBM won because it has some kind of a story which in itself is so rare these days in mainstream cinema.

It was the best of the worst at the time. Everything about it was little more than average.

Maybe if I was [a closet] gay I would see it differently, but if that is the case, then it is a poorly made film. I mean, no-one needed to have been in space to enjoy Alien.

I can imagine that this movie has to be quite good , one of my colleagues at work saw it 5 times and could not wait for the video release so that he could buy it. I'll have to see it one of these days
