What a ghastly typically British film this is. I bet though this got big praise amongst the self deluded luvvies and sycophants?. Its no wonder that British Films are still made hand to mouth and (even after all these years) there is still no proper 'industry' in which people can thrive, and films are made conveyor belt fashion like other countries have.
If you remember the BBC 'day of the triffids' serial its a sort of rip off of that. IE population gets some sort of bug, while hero is in hospital and wakes up later unnaffected, then chase around the country . Except this more gory of course. Every British film cliché in the book is in it.
