A creative and certainly an ambitious effort from director Chris Weitz but the lack of a strong script ultimately leaves it one-dimensional and disjointed.
While the visuals are immensely impressive, the sheer lack of a cohesive plot makes the viewer lose any interest in the characters and the magic and wonder of the effects become stagnant, with the overall feel of the film's pace being very rushed.
I have no idea what has gone wrong with Nicole Kidman recently, she seems to sleep walk through her roles of late and this is no exception. Daniel Craig has barely a few lines before he disappears for the rest of the film. However, Dakota Blue Richards in her first role does a fine job and the voice cast are very good. Freddie Highmore as Pan, Lyra's daemon and Ian McKellan as the bear king Iorek bring life to the CG characters.
Having never read the novel I do not see where these religious groups are coming from because I could not see any anti-Christian theme at all. In fact Chris Weitz was careful to remove any references from the script. Perhaps he should have kept them in, it probably would have made for a better film.
