Tell the folks at Channel 4 what you want to debate on next Saturday’s The TV Show (2 February). How do the following grab you?

1. What's your opinion of Supersize vs Superskinny (series started Tues 22 January)? Do you find programmes like this educational, entertaining, healthy, irresponsible, unnecessary or a bit of a freak show?

2. Proportional Representation: The News Forum in particular is keen on debating multiculturalism. What’s your opinion of British TV – do the people you see on Channel 4 and other broadcasters present a fair enough reflection of the country’s diversity in terms of culture, religion, class, wealth etc? Does it matter?

Keep an eye on The TV Show site for up-to-date information on the next show (the debates won’t be finalised until just before).

If those topics don’t wash, suggest another. What programmes have you loved or loathed this month? Let us know here or on the The TV Show site.

This weeks Forum Buzz , The TV Show’s round up of forum discussions, picks out a few on debates multiculturalism, among plenty of others.

[P.S. This post was updated on 25-01-2008, adding a link to details of Saturday’s show and a bit of clarification.]

Irrisponsible, unnecessary AND a bit of a freak show.

I think a more interesting debate could be what do different people understand the term "multiculturalism" means or stands for ?

Some people have adopted it as a term of abuse for unrepresentative practises or practises they feel are wrong and originate in a community new to the UK.

If you can agree what the basic term covers then it should be possible to have an arguement about it without perpetually talking at cross purposes.

Or to put it another way...

Lots of people come here to slag off Muslims/blacks/immigrants/etc. Many others come here desperately looking for someone (anyone) to call a racist/facist/etc.

Please, I've had enough of that on TV. How about some sensible debate between well-informed and/or intellectual types regarding something other than global warming, race, obesity, religion or Iraq?

Surely there are other topics within the areas of economics, politics, science, history or our society that could be debated.

Totally agree. What a laugh. This is the website where the Moderators routinely delete comments and whole threads, for reasons which no poster can fathom. How long would threads on Multiculturalism last?

And the other bit, which you have conveniently left out.

Nice thought Gnome fan but it just won't happen. I remember the early years of Channel 4 when they tried the sorts of programmes you are advocating. The Sun led the media hysteria, calling it "Channel Bore", and the viewers stayed with BBC & ITV.

If they want decent viewing figures I suggest they stick to fat people vs thin people and at all costs ensure that no one appears on TV who might be cleverer than their audience.

I especially recommend those special evenings where all the programmes are of celebrities doing things they are rubbish at. I think they are called Saturdays.

I like topics like supersize vs superskinny, but I prefer something more original than that once in a while.

I have an idea which is to grab someone who is extremely logical and use him to confront ideas that we hold for granted but which have no logical basis. I don't mean religion, that's boring, I mean things like culture, fashion and why we only buy things in expensive packages instead of cheaply in big economy bags etc etc..

OK! something different to discuss. Did anyone watch A BOY CALLED ALEX tonight at 9p.m. Think we should have more programmes like this, it was excellent.

OK! was about this l7 year old guy who has cystic fibrosis and is partially deaf. He,s a music prodigy and even though he has this disease which is going to shorten his life and he could die at any minute, he lives life like no-one I,ve ever seen before. He made me feel ashamed that I moan and think I,ve got problems when this amazing guy who is going through hell, health wise, is so upbeat and happy.

We picked up on a couple of interesting forum debates on multiculturalism - among other things - in Forum Buzz, The TV Show’s round up of forum discussions.

I have to confess that due to work reasons I have temporarily emigrated. Therefore I'm currently not watching British TV (not a bad thing at all!).

But if you ask me my views I'd say that Channel 4 actively seeks to be a freak show -it tries to be provocative in the cheapest possible way. Information, education, etc etc are obviously not part of channel 4's agenda. They just want to grab audience. Any way to achieve this end is acceptable for channel 4. Channel 4 is the champion of tackyness in the UK cultural scene. They have worked hard to get this title and they deserve it. Keep the good work.

So true, we might as well call this the Daily Hatred forum.

It was an excellent program and he was quite a character.

I know a couple of people that live with serious illnesses, they both have a similar drive.

And on this thread, I got my signature back. When I do the news forum, you block it out.

Why not allow us to have a cool signature even on the news forum? Just a thought now. Don't punish me with a ban or suspension. THis ain't Hussain's Iraq or Bush's America, right?

An honest debate on the pros & cons would make a refreshing change!
Unfortunately the party line is it's wonderful & we need more of it, just politicians mouthing tired cliches about 'hardworking immigrants' & 'valuable contributions'.
The news forum debates usually consist of pro immigrationist asked to state the benefits naming 'the food' & then retreating behind calling everyone opposed 'racist'. End of debate.

Forums bring the very best out of racists. In the real world out there, they are so restricted with their views and actions. This is the best place for bashing every Abdul, Patel and Abramavich.

Your TV show will be a flop. I can bet on that !!!

People are afraid to show their "true" colours in public unless of course you are in the NF(C 18 group) or the BNP.

So you are saying that many (most?) people hold negative opinions about immigration? Finally we agree on something!

Also, why are people so scared of the M word? Didn't we colonise , plunder and change many cultures of so many countries across the world? Did they even have a voice back then? We used every method from slavery to brutal methods
