To be fair Melboy, interest rates have been out of the Government's hands since 1997, and instead have been the responsibility of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, with a remit of keeping inflation low and stable. In general terms they have succeeded, but the problem has been that the housing market has taken off at a pace far different to that of the wider economy. It was not the MPC's job to control house prices, hence they continued to rise unchecked for so long.

I do think that relaxed lending criteria, and people refusing to educate themselves about the responsibilities they were taking on, are equally important factors.

Whilst TV shows may have taught the wider public some of the tricks of the trade (dressing to sell, cheeky offers etc) these are not new inventions, and those in the property game have been doing it all for years. It is pretty much just common sense after all!

Oh! Yes! Your right on that fact ER...the BoE sets the IR rates. I was forgetting the First Lord of the Treasury takes a back seat now on setting IR's (Cop-out)
S'funny though how the postmortem wash-up over Northern Rock condemns Smiler Brown for hashing the BoE and the FSA and the current Chancellor (Darling) for total indecisiveness because the left-hand doesn't know what the right-hand is doing when it comes to a financial disaster in the offing..... so they all sit on them or at best suck their thumbs.
Mel.

Do you want some facts?

A detailed study of UK emigration by the Institute of Public Policy Research showed a net 2.7 million Britons have left the country since 1966, or 67,500 per year. This figure is net of those who come back.

It is clear that an enormous number of us live abroad and presumably intend to stay away. According to the IPPR, 5.5 million British passport holders live abroad permanently, and another 500,000 live abroad part of the time through second homes. In total that is actually more of us living abroad than there are foreigners living in the UK.

This has important economic implications, why, who foots i.e. the bill for healthcare? The healthcare costs of greying Britons will be borne by countries to which they have not contributed national insurance contributions. France, where 250,000 Brits have second homes, has already moved to curb the health benefits available to foreign nationals. From March 2008 foreigners resident in France who are under 65 and not working will no longer be eligible for state-subsidised healthcare.
Despite all this, the British diaspora is set to continue. There are 41 countries around the world with more than 10,000 Britons living there and another 71 countries with more than 1,000.

Besides, emigration on a large scale isn’t anything new for Britain. Between 1853 and 1913, more than 13 million citizens left the UK for the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Many of those were poor and struggling.
These days, at least, we are making our choice in more comfortable circumstances.

TV shows?????

What happened to C4, it was such a healthy baby? Now it scrapes the barrel making Bedlam tours, keepin it real navel gazing exercises and patronising tittle tattle.
Our 4 button gets hit once a week, for Timeteam, in the 80s I rarely watched anything else.
Now we're asked whether its bread and butter for the last fifteen years has all been a ghastly mistake? Deal or no deal? Go figure.

The folks at The TV Show thank you for your excellent opinions on the property show debate and would like to invite you all to join the debate on Saturday 1 March.

If you would like to be part of the studio audience and welcome the chance to have your say air live on the programme, please email thetvshow@channel4.com.
Please note that numbers are limited, so if you're interested don’t hang about.

The TV Show will be filmed live in West London at 4pm on Saturday 1 March, but everyone needs to be there well before kick-off.

Keep up to date with on The TV Show debates. The subjects may change between now and Saturday.

PS There’s several viewpoints (e.g. British diaspora [good word]) aired here that may be of interest to C4 programme makers other than The TV Show. I’ve passed them on.

I'll just add my two pence worth, I think the answer is obviously yes, I think tv shows which have shown how to make lots of money out of property have undoubtedly contributed towards the rise in investment in property and house prices. There are more buy to lets than ever.

I cannot ever recall people being so obsessed with property as in the last 8 years. Every Tom Dick and Harry I speak to seems to think they're a financial genius because their houses have risen in value.

These programmes have just added to the long standing British opinion that house prices can only go up, which will only ever change if they correct to a sensible level.

Just to add, because I can't edit my original message for some reason:

I personally don't like something as vital as housing being promoted as something to invest in to make money out of, for every winner theres a loser, and the big losers are going to be our children (and anyone like me who missed the boat).

Thanks for all your contributions to the Boom and Bust debate.

Due to the strong feelings evoked by last night’s C4 News coverage of Prince Harry, by Jon Snow, this has now become focus of the main debate for The TV Show tomorrow, (Channel 4 Saturday 1 March 4:10pm).

Unfortunately The Boom and Bust debate will now be postponed to a later date.

But that is no reason not to continue the discussion here.

Thanks, The TV Show Web Editor

I definately believe the shows are responsible for the boom/bust - suddenly every man and his dog had to put money into property. I am a letting agent and found that people were borrowing big mortgages and raising deposits out of the equity on their own homes, buying 'investment' property and then once completion is through coming into the lettings agents and asking for their opinion of what it will let for. Inevitably because they had not done their homework before buying they needed more rent than the market will bear. Now that the interest rates have risen these people are being caught out as their rents mean that they have a shortfall - there will be many more repossessions to come.

Heres to a world where 3 year olds do as they are told and always say thankyou!
