Thanks for the nice comments Veggieburger, and thanks for your patience Humble_Horace and everyone else. We are updating the guidelines and they will include some of the suggestions you have made, but I am really pleased that this dialogue is already paying off - long may that continue!

Which I do have an issue with because there have been many perfectly reasonable threads about that topic that have kept within the boundaries of potential libel and/or defamation and simply because dandini objects, the thread is gone.

May I respectfully point out that the ONLY fact known in the McCann case is that a 3yr old child went missing.

Absoluely anything and everything else has not been prooved, and is therefore simply gossip and speculation.

And in a case like this, no matter whose side you are on, you ARE slandering the other.

I fully accept that the majority of information is speculation, but i assumed the point of a discussion forum was to discuss such topics.

If someone flat out accused the parents of direct involvement (as has happened on this forum) then I have no objection to it being removed as it is completely unproven.

But to actually discuss how such a thing would happen, could happen, did happen - I can't see an issue with that if it keeps within the forum terms and conditions.

I accept that, at this stage, a year and a bit down the line, any such discussion will merely be repeating previous discussions - and arguments - ad infinitum, but my objection still stands - dandini should not dictate what is said about this particular case.

I believe I read somewhere on this forum a remark about how digital spy have maintained an active thread about this case for a whole year with well over 60 thousand posts and they are just as susceptible to any potential slander claims as Channel 4, so how are they able to do it and Channel 4 not ?

I wanted to thank you and your colleagues for your efforts. I did so, on a thread by Voodu entitled "heads up", as did a number of other news forum users. Our thanks, I am sure, hold up, though you will now never see them.

You'll never see them because somebody has taken it upon themselves to remove what I thought was a quite pleasant thread in it's entirety!

It wasn't my thread, but contained the few moments I had taken to express heartfelt thanks to you - i.e. my precious time. I am not minded to chase the admin on Voods' behalf, but I think an explanation and an assurance that our thanks might be seen by those to whom they are expressed are most definitely due.

( I'll take a copy just in case.)

Complete nonsense! I have had countless threads about the McCanns deleted, the last one simply stating a fact - that they were not going to take part in the Portuguese reconstruction. Other facts, such as leaving the children alone night after night whilst they enjoyed themselves have been confirmed by their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell. I agree with Mr Slippy and others, a forum should be a place of discussion about ALL stories in the news, not just those that suit lazy and incompetent administrators.

I read this thread earlier on today and thought, oh good we may have some changes on here....yeah right...I've just been on the Big Brother forum, there was a long thread about launch night which was going wonderfully well. One poster bought up the topic of racism and started to be a bit offensive. I reported the post and I'm sure a few others did as well. I expected his posts to be removed, could have been done easily enough so as not to cause confusion in the thread, but oh no, minutes later, the whole thread has been removed.

You talk the talk, how about walking the walk???

I wonder how quick it is to remove a message from a thread. And whether the thread has to go offline while a message is being deleted.

Just out of a metter of interest. There are 28 pages on the main BB thread, all about BB9.

The programme only started today. Maybe the forum is so busy that it`s quicker to delete the whole thread rather than just one message.

He refused to promise not to make similar remarks ever again (remarks which were not wrong or against the rules in the first place) so was banned.

Another instance I know of is when one poster made a slanderous remark about another. The victim of the slander replied asking for an apology and retraction stating that otherwise he would proceed with legal action, his post was immediately removed although the legally dubious post was allowed to remain for some days. The slanderous post was removed only when specific request was made for it to be so. The poster of the slander is still on these fora under the same name whilst the poster of the threat of legal action was banned for threatening another poster.

If the MODS truly read posts in context they would have seen that the post in reply was not the one which should have been removed but the one which prompted it should have. I have a degree in law and can assure you that the post in question was definitely and blatantly slanderous and wouldn't have been hard to prosecute.

Those of us that are THAT interested in BB would already be posting the BB forums.

It`s bad enough when normal posters write BB messages in other forums. Surely C4 doesn`t have to as well.

Thanks for your thanks, and for taking the time to repost them here. We are looking at ways to make the removal of offensive comments work better for everyone, including leaving threads intact. It will take a while for us to get the systems up and running, and do the necessary training, so please bear with us while we do this, and cope with the annual large increase in posts from enthusiatic Big Brother viewers!
