O.K. based on this small very limited sample of viewers the opinion seems spilt as follows.

5 (23%)of you have posted that they desire for more homegrown intelligent programming that deals with teen issues.

17 (77%) have posted that they desire for more or less the staus quo,that is,trashy American brain candy and U.K.produced equivalent.

So there are the stats.Since ch4 relies heavily on Ad revenue to fund it's activities,it will seek to maximise bums on sofas so that large corporations can place thier ads in your face.That means going with the majority vote.

Alternatively ch4 could use the stats to split it's progamming content accordingly,ie 25% relevant issues content (obviously this can be in drama format too)and 75% drivel.At least then the minority who have an I.Q well above 0.5 will be satisfied.So if we look at T4 on a weekend as the main platform,out of 10 hrs of broadcasting on a Saturday and Sunday 2.5 hrs should be dedicated to something that the more inquisitive and intelligent teenagers will enjoy.Same goes for E4 but the numbers are larger

Remember that channel 4 is a public services broadcaster it was created by act of parliment and thus has a remit which was defined in the 2003 communications act.This states that "the public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular:

(a) demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;

(b) appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;

(c) makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and

(d) exhibits a distinctive character."

I think ch4 is currently failing in it's remit concerning teenagers and is ignoring what appears to be a minority who demand and deserve better.Let's hope that a good part of that £10mill is used to commission something that meets thier requirements.

more great shows like skins

I live in NZ and our C4 (entirely unrelated to British C4) did this series of 2-minute episodes of a drama about kids in their first year of uni. A 2-minute episode aired every weekday, and each episode was available for download on the net and to phones. Hardly the big money maker kind of series, but it proved a popular and clever way to take advantage of people who watch as much telly online or on phones as on a traditional set.

It's also a good way to guarantee people have clicked over to the channel just before the start of an episode of a popular ("real") show.

I just find it stupid that the new generation has become obssessed with drink and drugs. Especially drink. I think we should have more shows like Skins and Shameless. More comedy. Try getting Family Guy from BBC3 & FX. Also, have some more live music shows like the Shockwaves Album Chart Show but on a bit earlier and about twice a week with a different presenter (Sara Cox can't interview to save her life lol - get a T4 presenter to do it). You could also make a website just for teens with loads of cool stuff on it. And have another festival for teens only and somewhere other than Weston Super Mare. It's too far away for people up north. There's loads i can think of. Have a comedy night/show with some funny stuff and some live comedians. Things like that.

More British teen dramas that tackle real issues, that have young dynamic casts and are on once a week for an hour!

Sugar Rush (which was so amazing and i really miss!)
Hollyoaks Specials
As If (which was also amazing and again i really miss!)

argh, no more skins and crappy teen dramas. why does everything have to be about sex these days?! dont get me wrong we all love a bit of hanky panky, but id rather do it than watch someone do it on tv. id like to see some harmless fun on tv, and things that matter, unlike who's having an affair with who on hollyoaks (i dont even watch hollyoaks anymore haha). i like stuff like dragon's den and takeshi's castle. we want cartoons like south park and the simpsons, a few nature programmes like that tiger: spy in the jungle programme and stuff like the apprentice and as i said before dragon's den. well thats my opinion anyway, i dont know whether others agree.

omg i so agree, we all know what getting drunk and having sex is all about. i dont wanna know about 14 year olds getting drunk on cider. all these drink, drugs and sex storylines are so crap, its pathetic, cant people get something more interesting in their lives, argh i wanna learn about things. god im so sad, but hey i did all that when i was 14, ive grown out of it. and im only 18 now!

We've already got the simpsons. Newer episodes would be better though. Isn't it something like simpsons episodes don't get shown on channel 4 until 4 years after they first aired on skyone lol?

And there's nothing wrong with skins! Sure we all have had times like that and we know about things that go on in the programme but that's a good thing because we can relate to it. We should have more programmes which we can relate to. You just gave me an idea of having a show about young people like 12-15 year olds all going out on a weekend getting p****d lol. Skins seems to glamourise underage drinking, underage sex, drug taking. Ok, I agree teenagers do do those things but through watching Skins it has glamourised the things i've mentioned above.

What C4 needs to do is get a bunch of intelligent, articulate teenagers between 15 - 18 and get them to do a newsnight style of programme, only instead of covering more adult issues like the BAE scandal and Saudi Arabia but talk about issues like, Bus companies raising their prices, basically get the director for a bus company in and get the kids to interview them. Get my jist?

Yeah, but I think they need something that will get a lot of viewers. That would be something on the more educational side of things but this is for teens and personally, i think we need more fun things. We get enough education at school and college. Maybe a website with stuff like that on would be better but if it was anything to do with 'newsnight' or the news, none of the people i know would watch it.

If it was to do with issues that are important to teenagers then they'll watch it, another example get a few shop owners on and ask why they have those speakers that play a high pitched sound to disperse teenagers. There are so many issues teenagers face were questions go unanswered.

Maybe you dont know anyone who would watch a programme like that but there are plenty of others who would watch.

it's not as easy as you suggest, I mean BBC and FX probably have a lengthy contracts for the rights to show Family Guy and would cost a bomb for C4 to get hold of.

With the musical festival, those things take time to get popular, Radio 1 festival up in Preston last year went down well but yearly festivals require permission from the local councils and residents, if something goes wrong i.e. Lots of drunks or druggies around and the festival gets a bad reputation then it would get plugged.

i don't want "sugar candy everyones a billionaire" american stuff anymore...if you want to do teen shows, Skins stuff (but don't steal STYLE) is good..dealing with the current teenage issues we have in my opinion is always good

and this is sort of going along the lines of what you suggested Let_Robinson_Sing...but maybe some kind of a show that helps teenagers become more AWARE of the BIG issues in life

- what if there was a show that is based on fact; but is about teenagers.... something that mixes teenage lives with big unaddressed issues; like "fur for fashion" or "war for peace" - i mean, its an odd mix and would have to be done really well, but it would be interesting and fresh and different

im thinking get rid of all this boring factual programs...as a teenager i dont want to watch things that address bus fares (no offence to the person who suggested that) i want a few light hearted shows like popworld or some comedies like south park and new episodes of the simpsons cause im sick of the one about lisa and bleedin gums. i like skins and shameless and so do a lot of my mates. i think you shouldnt be basing your money on one or 2 new shows and get a whole group. a music show(i know u hav a few but get another one that is funny or like never mind the buzzcocks), a comedy (that either isnt a boring american show that no one in england can relate to or get some cartoons), a drama (about teen agers from different backgrounds...not just a few posh people a normal person and someone from a council estate and occasionally thro in someone from an ethnic minority), and get rid of all this massive group of rubbish reality shows like that one with paris hilton or the one about the tennis player and old women.
