Here are a few words and phrases found on Friends that have no rightful place in the English language. What does this rubbish actually mean and why don’t they talk properly?

So Totally

Well Hello!, hello and hellooo

I’m good

Like yeah

I was like

I mean come on

Hang out

Yo dude

Cool

Doin’ it

Makin’ out

In fact thinking about it, that is just about the entire script… apart from the canned laughter and the long pauses that have to be included for the establishing shots even after 9 or 10 years of using the same sets.

I think the long pauses are there to indicate to people that they should be laughing as the characters have said something "funny". Roll Eyes

If it was truly funny they would not need to tell anyone that it was.

They are all used in Friends and seem to be finding their way into the English language, which is very annoying.

Yo dude, so totally cool thread you got here. Like yeah I suppose the phrases are getting into the english language but I mean come on they're not that annoying are they? When I first read it I was like shut up!

But then I read it again and thought, actually when you try it they're highly annoying and they just don't sound right with a british accent eitherBig Grin

They may only be words but they are still annoying, not least when delivered by those awful whiny American voices.

When you say ‘like’ do you mean ‘similar to’, or do you just mean working class? Big Grin

Pet Peeve of Mine: the phrase "British accent". There's no such thing. Thanks.

Do I look like a mug? Have I got a handle? Am I made of china? Am I kept in a cupboard or on a small wooden tree? Would you like to put your lips on my rim? You may answer that question, the rest were rhetorical.

no, there is no such thing as a British accent, as it would have to be a mixture of Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English. So, no.
