I had severe issues with 4OD this week ... I was doing some maintenance on my PC and as I am a competitive Gamer I wanted to remove the start-up of khost/4OD from my auto starts on doing this it rendered the player Unusable. I re-downloaded it and tried to repair / un-install BOTH these fixes gave me continual errors so I was left with not being able to install fresh , repair or un-install it!! which to be perfectly honest is ridiculous!!!
Here is the good bit ... MY FIX! for the above errors which 4OD tech support have still been unable to help me with


Firstly re-download 4OD and if you can install it to another PC/Laptop or if you do not have this luxury ... create a separate partition or use another hard drive from your main OS one [program files] Install it afresh on this separate machine or hard drive and then go to the install directory normally c:/program files/channel4/4OD copy this entire folder to a memory stick or CD/DVD next you want to lcate the Kontiki folder in the same root directory as the channel4 folder C:/program files/Kontiki now copy this entire folder over to your slected media be it USB mem stick CD/DVD.... Next you will want to take it to your PC which is having the issues and then copy these to folders back into your main Program files .... After this launch the installer and you will now be able to either repair / remove and viola all is well again Smile


hope this helps some of you and if not then at least it made me happy again 'cos this has been over a week i had these continual errors

Im sorry but i have no idea what you are on about, i realise to you this explanation makes perfect sense but what???? seperate partition! seriously could u explain this a bit less confusingly please x

The KService and KHost processes are the underlying peer-to-peer platform that provides the file sharing/download facility.

The KService process gets rather processor-hungry if you have more than a few programmes queued for retrieval or already downloaded.

The issue that hypereall is reporting seems to be that the KService/KHost processes were occupying too much processor power, interfering with game play. So he (she) removed at least the KHost.exe and 4oD applets from the startup routines on the PC. However, this broke the 4oD application, resulting in errors (which the technical people were understandably unwilling to support).

The fix was to copy the downloaded programmes onto some spare storage somewhere, re-install 4oD and copy the downloaded programmes back into the original folder.

There is some documentation in the online FAQ and help files on how to disable the services to prevent them from automatically starting.

Thats what i mean by what do you mean when you refer to a partition. Im afraid i use my laptop as a normal person does, its not that i know nothing about them but quite frankly i dont speak computer tech as i have no technical computer training

Probably the best way to describe a partition is a separate section of the hard drive like if for example you have one hard drive but your computer shows a C and D drive in the Hard Drive section of "My Computer", that's because that 1 hard drive has been divided into 2 partitions. So really a partition is a virtual division of a hard drive into more than 1 piece with each piece being a partition.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ON ABOUT?

there is a fare simpler way of fixing this. uninstall 4OD, then use a reg cleaner like CCleaner and get rid of anything relating to 4OD then just reinstall.

it is ideas like the above that give windows a bad name.
