I fixed this my uninstalling 4od, and bbc iplayer if you have it

then go to my computer, c drive, documents and settings (for xp) users(for vista) then select all users, then select application data, (hidden files may need to be viewable) find kontiki folder, delete it

reboot, reinstall

This worked for XP

1. Use the 4oD Installtion pack to uninstall the 4oD www.channel4.com/4od/installer/channel4_on_demand.exe

2. Open the windows explorer and choos tools from the top menu, folder options, View, then take the tick off Hide protected Operating System Files, and Show hidden files folders.
You may wish to put these back on after doing this.

3. Then use choose the windows explorer to find the directory.
c:\Documents and Setting\All Users\Application Data\ and delete the kontiki directory.

4. Use the windows explorer to also find the c:\program files\ directory and delete the kontiki folder.

5. Reboot the machine

6. Use internet explorer to go to the 4oD website and re-load the 4oD package.

7. Reboot the PC again and test.

If this fails you may need to repeat this process but use a proprietary registry cleaner to remove all traces of the 4oD package after step 5 and before step 6.

I used regedit to find all the instances of kontiki, khost and kservice and deleted all these entries (but this only recommende for the techies).

Please attempt the steps below (it is most likely that carrying out step 1 will resolve your issue)

1. Please ensure that KService.exe (Delivery Service Manager) and KHost.exe are added as exceptions to your antivirus, spyware and firewall software and allowed full access to the internet.

Sometimes security software mistakenly blocks KService.exe (Delivery Service Manager) and KHost.exe but they 100% safe services that are essential to 4oD.

For a step by step guide about configuring your security software please see our help pages: http://help.channel4.com/4oD/

Use the search facility to find a advice about how to configure the security software you use such as Norton, McAfee etc.

KService.exe and KHost.exe are stored here: C:\Program Files\Kontiki

Please test 4oD using free content.
If you still experience difficulties follow the instructions below.

2. Check if KService has been registered as a Windows service.

a. In Windows XP:
- Click 'Start' then 'Run'.
- Type services.msc and press enter/return.

b. In Windows Vista:
- Open the search box on the start menu type services.msc and press enter/return.
- Follow and UAC prompts.

3. On the list of services look for 'KService'.

a. If it is present and does not have a status of 'Started' the right-click on it and select Start. Attempt to start 4oD.

b. If it is not present continue with step 4 below.

4. Open a command prompt with administrator privileges:

a. In Windows XP:
- Ensure you are logged in as an Administrator.
- Click 'Start' the 'Run'.
- Type cmd and press enter/return.

b. In Windows Vista:
- Open the search box on the start menu and type cmd.
- Right-click on the cmd program that is shown.
- Select 'Run as Administrator' and follow the UAC prompts.

5. Highlight all of the line below, right click on it and choose Copy.

"C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KService.exe" -service

6. Right click in the black Command Prompt Window and choose Paste, then hit the Enter/Return button

7. Highlight all of the line below, right click on it and choose Copy.

net start kservice

8. Right click in the black Command Prompt Window and choose Paste, then hit the Enter/Return button

9. The above command will return "The KService was started successfully"

hi there,

I got as far as step 3a.

When I tries to start the service I got the following error:

Could not start KService service on the local computer

Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

Any ideas on how I can resolve this?

As you have been prompted with a 4005 error when typing in "C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KService.exe" -service
please navigate to this directory.
C:\Program Files\Kontiki and check that this folder contains KService.exe.
If it does then this means you have typed in the command incorrectly, if it doesn't then this executable file is in the wrong directory.

Please perform a computer search for this file, generally this can install into the local files/temp folder incorrectly. Once you have found this file you will need to adjust the command line directory to the directory that the file is now in.
