Hi all,
A few points you may like to take into account before using 4OD or Skys on demand service as they both use the same software, There are also reports that the sky version leaves kservice running after uninstalling. For me 4OD did remove kservice after uninstalling but please check.

This is a Peer to Peer application It WILL degrade your internet connection ALL THE TIME.
It shares files weather you have downloaded anything or not AND even after you have shut it down in the task bar it continues.
The only way to stop it is to manualy shut down the KSERVICE.EXE program.

If you have limited bandwidth or have a fair usage policy with your ISP (EG Tiscali unlimited) you WILL fall foul of it or be charged for going over your limit.

After installing this and shutting it down I noticed a significant slowing in my connection and alot of traffic going to and from the machine 4OD was installed on. After looking at the traffic on that machine (download tidmon and tcpview to take a look and use to shut it down) I found a program that I didnt recognise (kservice.exe) I then checked the amount of data transfered on my router, this showed in the last 24 hours over 1gb down and nearly 200mb up, FAR more than the hand full of ebay pages I had viewed that day, and the machine had been off for 8 hours.

So be awair

Cheers
Jay

Kontiki can only share files that you have downloaded. It throttles its transfer rates when youre connection is being used for other things, so there should be little effect on performance.

If you're not actively downloading anything through 4oD (or another Kontiki using app) then it will only be using your upload. The 1gb download will not be from Kontiki unless you requested it.

That said, if your ISP does place any caps on your upload/download then you should check what these are before using any P2P applications.

rubbish, not true at all Eek

Kontiki, seeks data every few mintues. those files you downloaded will be on the upload grid. most likly it will keep on uploading when your connection is on idel mode.

keep in mind Kontiki is still a peer to peer. not much different then bittorrent

You can temporarily stop Kontiki running in the background by going to Start Menu ->Run and typing “net stop kservice” and clicking ok. The next time you start windows or 4oD, or logon however it will kick off again.

If you want detailed instructions on how to use 4oD without having to have a peer 2 peer client constantly running I have posted instructions on the topic “I'll clarify something for you”

There is another way of unistalling 4oD. Hit Alt Ctl Delete, click on Kservice which is running in the background and hit end process. After you have done that you can uninstall 4oD in the usual way through Control Panel and clicking on add remove programs.

VodAsia - you are wrong about Kontiki. The software is very careful about not flooding your connection when you need it. In fact it's designed to back off if it detects that you or someone else using the same connection needs the bandwidth.

If it wasn't and it badly affected users then isn't it rather unlikely that Channel 4, BBC and Sky would all have chosen to use it?

I don't think Kontiki's rate control mechanism works properly. On my computer, 4oD slows both Firefox and Filezilla to a crawl. The Kservice.exe program sits there chewing 5-10% of my CPU.

What really annoyed me was that when I noticed this and exited 4oD via the taskbar, Kservice.exe kept on running. Without even a popup telling me that this would happen. As far as I am concerned this is completely unacceptable - when I close a program, I want it to be closed! I presume there is something in the licence agreement stating this happens otherwise C4 would fall foul of the Computer Misuse Act, but even so, C4 (and the BBC, and Sky) should not be distributing software which behaves like spyware.

There is a utility available that makes it easier to control your downloads. Just Google for tvodmonitor and you'll find it...

Re: 4OD running while closed down

it says that everywhere...its something that they boast about. however it doesn't seem to do that on my computer. I never have anything downloaded unless i leave the window open.
