I don;'t know of anyone else has noticed, but 4OD automatically loads into the system tray each time I boot windows. It does not appear in startup items in my start menu, nor does it go away when i delete the registry key associated with running it!
Can anyone help me so that I choose when I want to run 4OD rather than it auto-loading? also, is there anyway to kill the "KSERVICE.EXE" without having to do the CTRL+ALT+DEL routine? It seems to use a lot of system resources, even when I have exited 4od from the system tray. Anyone? moderators?
i noticed this too. i hope this is just a mistake with the beta as it is very annoying that 4OD opens automatically. It not only caused my computer to start slower, but also seems to leech my internet. For computer users who are not aware of this leeching, internet bills could be a nasty shock.
Ive had 4OD for about an hour now and already 2 major bugs, not a good start.
If you are having problems still Winpatrol (free to download from dowload dot com) is good for removing and controlling auto startup programs. Though this will itself start each time in order to protect you from having startups added without your permission. Also Spybot in its advanced options can allow you to remove startups it is also a very good adware remover.

I have just posted detailed instructions on how to control when 4oD runs under the topic "I'll clarify something for you" for those that are interested.
The problem is that Khost.exe is installed in the startup whenever 4oD is used, so has to be removed each time, before closing the PC. When I asked the tech support guys at 4oD why this was, their answer was that it's in the terms and conditions, and to uninstall it if I didn't like it. I don't download anything, only using the streaming service, so do wonder why this is the case. I have replied to the tech support guys with a reinstate of my question, as the t & c only refer to P2P on dowloading, so I will see. The BBC iPlayer does NOT put Khost.exe in my startup, so there must be another reason for them.
PLEASE ANYONE!!!! I read on my teletext service that viewers ought to 'retune' their tv sets in the first week of october so I did. Within seconds of pressing the menu button on my remote I had lost channel4, channel4plus one, more4 and E4 (though E4 plus one remained). I also lost ITV1 and ITV2 I think, and goodness knows what else. It is a high price to pay. I have missed out on all those ancient 80's channel 4 shows. Traumatised. Any ideas?
"Pause downloading" stops downloads in their tracks but quitting the 4oD systray applet does NOT stop uploads from your machine and checks from the peer-to-peer software.
If you do not want the peer-to-peer platform "KService" (part of Kontiki) to start when you start Windows, open the Administrative Tool "Services", find KService, double click and change the Startup type to "Manual" from "Automatic". Press OK.
To start and stop KService on demand, a simple solution is as follows. When you don't want KService to be running, quit the 4oD application, Exit the 4oD Systray applet and use the Run... applet on the Start Menu to execute "net stop kservice". Starting the 4oD application kicks KService back into life, but it can also be restarted using "net start kservice".

You could even create a shortcut for each of these. For the uninitiated...
Right-click, choose "New > Shortcut", enter "net stop kservice" and click Next, enter "Stop 4oD KService" and click finish.
and...
Right-click, choose "New > Shortcut", enter "net start kservice" and click Next, enter "Start 4oD KService" and click finish.

Obviously, if you stop the peer-to-peer software, it means that your files are not being shared to other people which degrades the overall service for the 4oD community.
However, it also means that
(a) you don't end up breaching agreements with your ISP not to clog up their service at peak times with peer-to-peer traffic
and
(b) you can avoid KService causing interruptions to your internet connection and causing high CPU usage.
After reading this thread - and having shared similar frustration and annoyance - I found a very simple way of stopping the 4OD application from starting the Kontiki services on startup.
(If you haven't dome so already, follow vodasia's instructions above to set the KService service to manual start rather than automatic.)
Now navigate to your Windows directory, and open up the autoexec.bat file for editing. If you do not have one, simply create one. (Right click to create a new file, choose 'text file', and rename it 'autoexec.bat'.)
Enter a new line at the end of the file: "net stop kservice" (without the quotes).
Save the file.
And that's it. Even though the 4OD application will still start KService on startup (which seems to be unavoidable), the autoexec.bat file will immediately close it again.

If you create a logoff script which deletes the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run kdx value, then when the machine is started up again, it won't run automatically. But runs fine when you open it.
Problem is the application resets the registry value every time its run, so using a logoff script to delete it stops that.
