It's probably easy to guess who, but you need to say why;
Sir Wally Herbert Ralph Plaisted Roald Amundsen James Clark Ross Robert Falcon Scott George Dufek

All explorers of North/South Poles Is Ralph Plaisted the only one still alive?
First part right. Second guess may be true, but it isn't the right answer. You almost got it.

okey dokey; As you said, they all were polar explorers, but only Amundsen went to BOTH poles.
Let's try another "connected" one. What do all these people have in common? There is a very specific connection that does not apply to any other person in history. However, a big clue for you is that a different but related list would include a "patsy" that is featured in a film by Oliver Stone.
Richard Lawrence Griselio Torresola Samuel Byck Lynette Fromme John Hinckley, Jr. Francisco Duran Vladimir Arutinian

Jackson, Trueman, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Clinton and Bush in that order.
Nice question
Correct again, the important word being "attempts" because they all failed and of course the "patsy" in the question was Lee Harvey Oswald.

Originally posted by sarana's Mum: what is interesting is just how many attempts have been made on US presidents. Who'd want the job?
Not me. Apart from "JFK" I think my favourite political film is "Dave", in which a look-alike takes the place of the president and does things that the real president can't do. There's a touching scene where one of the security staff says he would "take a bullet" to protect him, and whatever anyone thinks of the system, that part is probably true.
