The show is filmed some months in advance. (Those who have been in the audience will tell you exactly how far in advance). When they had the phone in competition Noel never announced the name of the winner, rather it was just flashed on the screen.

As for the phone-in scam, it was for the very reason that they tried to con viewers into thinking it was live, and thus had a chance of winning the £10,000 every time, when the draw, of course, had taken place months before, that they had one of the largest fines in UK TV history imposed on them and were forced to withdraw it.

Hi rationalist I know the show is recorded, been there seen them do the prize draw, it was only the amount that was decided (not always £10k)the winner was decided on the day the show was aired.

I understood the fines were because they had closed the phone lines each day earlier than they said they had, not because the whole thing was done months in advance. To me, the way the phone in was done made it obvious the programme wasn't live - that Noel never mentioned the name of the winner; the name was just displayed on the TV screen. The reason Noel didn't give the name of the winner - he didn't know it!!

I agree Peggy it doesn't take Einstien to work out what was happening. The trouble with common sense is... well it's not that common.

The important thing, though, is it's highly unlikely that the scam will happen again, because I've just heard that Ant and Dec's production company have bought the rights to DOND. I understand they've also given themselves awards in the process.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were actually true!

The problem with the phone vote wasnt quite as u said. It was actually that they were advertising thast you could win, say, £5000, £10000, or £15000, when in reality because the blue box opening had been done quite a few weeks / months earlier, the actual amount was known. In essence they were encouraging you to phone in to win a possible £15000 when actually the prize was already known at possibly £5000. In latter shows they opened the box after the first break and so you knew how much you were able to win. After that they just got caught up with everyone elses problems and closed the comp. I saw many box openings recorded that never made it to the tv show when it was aired!

Has anyone noticed that average winnings have more than halved since the 'golden goose' phone in competition was killed off.

Silly me! Its all random isn't it?

Exactly as I said in an earlier post, except I thought the highest amount was £10000, not £15000. What Peggy said is also correct, though. Later callers stood little or no chance of winning. One of the reasons the fine was so high (although it seems quite small now compared with those imposed on Ant and Dec's shows) is because, firstly, DOND continued with the phone-in scam for 7 weeks after being told by Ofcom to stop it and, secondly, Ofcom repeatedly asked C4 to give an on-screen apology, but they refused.
