My husband 'quit' in January, started again 2 weeks later and to this day thinks I don't know.I have kept it to myself all this time,so I don't have to put up with the smell in the house and car.He still buys the gum,and may smoke less than 20 a day,but the urge to nag him is great.
We are so open and honest with each other, but this shows the effect Nicotine has on you.

I don't agree that it's easy to quit, trust, but it is possible. Very possible. I have no willpower to diet and lose my middle-age spread, but I did have the willpower to quite the fags. When I quit, I knit my husband a sweater - did a few rows every time i wanted a fag. Also the fact we had just decorated our new home inspired us both to quit and not have the walls that loverly nicotine gold!

My son quit - not due to my "constant suggestions", but he decided on his own account, when he realized the fags were in charge of him, not the other way round. Maybe that might help those of you wanting to give up.
LOL.

Well done. I don't know about dieting, it's never been necessary for me to even try. I just know with cigarettes you just have to WANT to quit. It's a state of mind. At the time in question I was working and didn't have any transport, so caught the bus to work every weekday. That particular day when I got to the bus stop I was still a smoker, with a "mind of my own" and hence not willing to allow interfering do-gooders to nag me into giving up smoking. I'm not going to preach here to people who still want to smoke, but for those who don't, it took not having the kit in my pocket and realising what a nuisance it is when that kind of thing happens to change my mind like an on/off switch, because I could either walk all the way back up the hill and miss the bus or I could prove to myself that I was strong enough to go without for a day. As I waited for the bus I thought about all the reasons to quit for good and by the time I got onto the bus I was a non-smoker.
As long as you want to smoke, that wanting will defeat all your will power and if you say "I am trying to give up" that negative thinking will make it seem hard, and eventually your brain will interpret it as "I want to give up trying". You have to say "I am a non-smoker" or something equally positive. An important thing to know is that the nicotine cravings only last for a couple of minutes, and if you resist them that long then you'll be OK for another hour or two in the first 24 hours. After that the cravings get fewer and fewer, and right now I only get one or two a day that are very mild and very easy to resist.
I decided not to bother with patches or nicotine gum, so I just chewed regular gum, sucked my thumb, breathed in and out or whatever it took to get through the pangs and a bloke at work telling me I would not be able to quit just made me even more determined to do it!!

Hi poly g. Well, as long as you love doing something you might as well keep doing it, I reckon. I'm sure you already know all the reasons that people would tell you to quit, but it's not going to happen until you make the choice. Smile

To answer the question I'm OK thanks. Could be better but OK and keeping in good spirits. Using the no-DOND time to catch up on various things and basically just making sure I pay out less than I've got coming in!! Cool

I live in Scotland and the ban doesn't seem to have affected anyone all those smokers concerned have just accepted it and now stand out on the footpaths outside pubs, clubs and restaurants with their cancer stick in their hand, but I'm an ex smoker and proud of it.

Surely considering others means not smoking around non-smokers? I've lived with a hubby who has smoked in our home for years but since he tried to give up he has stopped smoking indoors.
It's lovely now and since we redecorated the living room, it stays clean! He has cut down a lot too and says he is going to give the nicotine gum a try, has anyone tried that?

I as you may know am in the process of TRYING to give up struggling a bit though if I'm honest...

I like Hazeleyes hubby don't smoke in the house either and it does make a difference, obviously.

The smoking ban came into effect here in Scotland and believe me it really is a good thing, don't forget I'm a smoker and I too thought cheek, will ruin my nights out etc,but believe me it doesn't the air in the pubs and clubs is so much nicer no nippy eyes etc,and surprisingly once your out and in company enjoying yourself the last thing I want to do is leave said company and nip outside and stand having a cig,so in in all hardly touch one all evening, not a bad thing is it. Big Grin

FREEDOM!!!!!!!
