Currently, less than 5 per cent of chicken bought in Britain is organic or free-range, and critics believe shoppers place too much emphasis on simply finding the lowest prices. Organic chicken in the supermarket is about 2.5 times the price of intensively reared birds.
so who is to blaim? is it us as the consumers? or is it the shops for producing them in the first place??
If caged chicken rearing was banned, then the price of barn reared and free range chickens would come down.
It all comes down to the mentality that "better quality means higher prices".
I doubt very much that all those people who currently buy the free range chickens do so simply because they object to the way that caged hens are reared, but because they believe they are getting better quality.
But, caged, barn or free range, all chickens have to pass the "fit for human consumption" regulations.

The cost of organic free range is coming down gradually. I think what will happen is that as it becomes more the done thing to buy organic, there will be more producers who switch to organic methods and hopefully bring down the price a bit more as it becomes more competetive.
