Hey, was wondering if some people could help me out on my media project! I've got to do some research on: "can children distinguish between what's real and what's not on television"

(reality tv, documentaries, the news VS. soaps, TV dramas etc)

would really REALLY appreicate your opinions and if you could answer the below questions that would be GREAT also, particularly those with young children. thanks

can children below 12 understand between fiction and non-fiction? any examples?

is there a specific age when children learn to distinguish between the two?

any other comments?

.

if you posted this in Big Brother General before BB commences you would most likely get a better response as the debating in their tends to be more active than in here.

I'm afraid I cant help you much with regards to answering your question as my kids are grown up and I dont recall as to what age they were able to separate fact from fiction. I tended to stick to the certification of videos/films as guidance as to what was suitable for them to watch but with regards to TV programmes that is a bit more difficult as of course that doesnt have the same kind of certification as films do.

Can`t really help you there.

As my kids used to accompany me to sci-fi conventions when they were young, they were able to tell the difference between fact and fiction from a very young age. Meeting, in person, an actor who played a mean baddie on TV, but was a great laugh "in the flesh" tended to make them realise that what was on the box wasn`t real. Smile

However, while I would occasionally allow my kids to watch programmes aimed at an older age group than they were, I wouldn`t let their friends watch those programmes at my house. And I did create holy hell when my son`s friend`s mother allowed him to watch a 18 cert horror film when he was 13.

John Smith: So what am I then? Nothing. I`m just a story.

Doctor: You`re an echo. That`s all. A TimeLord is so much more. A sum of knowledge; a code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it`s gone now, all of it. Gone forever.

yes, I would have felt the same angelus, I worked in the video industry for a while and was really hot on certification etc when it came to my kids. I wouldnt have been happy about them watching an 18 at 13 yrs of age either. so many lax parents tho who dont seem to care or bother
