Of course we remember you. And of course we're still here wittering on about rubbish.

So what else…..24…the last series was wonderful IMHO….I just don’t get people who slag this show….it does what it says on the Tin….if you’re looking for realism and tight plotting then don’t bother…if you’re looking for downright wonderful fun action then it’s the one for you Fatty (sorry re song reference!). I see it as Dick Barton for our age…escapism, thrills n’ spills and Jack and Tony kicking some arse. Still never missed an Ep. and don’t intend too…unless they kill off Tony…
I agree. I love the show. Okay it's probably a good reflection of Fox's right-wing bias (torture always seems so right when Jack Bauer does it <g> ) but for pure drama it's great. I think there was a definite dip in quality on season 3 but the last season was fantastic. And yes, if they killed Tony off I'd have to go into mourning.

Anyway, sorry about the stream of consciousness rambling…just nice to engage in discourse with intelligent people….will collect my thoughts and return soon….

I'd engage in discussion on the Mercury Music prize but I am so out of touch when it comes to music that I have little idea who these new fangled bands are. That said, can anyone tell me what the last track on the BT broadband advert (the free ipod tracks, soundtrack of your life, Blur, Supergrass ad) is? It's a woman singing. I thought it sounded like the woman from Moloko but I though they died a death ages ago. I can't really make out the lyrics.

Moloko have died a death. Roisin Murphy's gone solo.

Hey up, like. Work Work Work!

Good to hear from you again, Swiss Tony. Glad you are still knocking about, keeping the faith etc.

Totally agree about The Wire. I could easily lose myself in that show, so deep and textured, and, well, so damn good!

I've just worked my way through the second season of Carnivale, and while I really really like it, and its far out ideas, it doesn't half take a long time to get where its going, and it does seem to spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with the supporting characters, often to the detriment of that whole good versus evil main plot thing that it has going on, seemingly in the background. And HBO cancelled the damn thing just as things were starting to kick off. Still, the acting, directing, set design and recreation of this old forgotten world was very impressive, and it was good to see Clancy Brown channeling the Kurgan again. Back at the very start I thought he might actually be the good guy (although in hindsight, he's a priest, so obviously a bad guy, right!). And I need to know what happens next.

Rome has started well. Its very well made and acted, and has an interesting take on the whole Roman thing. Glad they've stuck with British accents, seems to make more sense (Alexander could have done with a bit more of that, and less Oirish!). Its refreshing that they don't try and tidy the people up at all. The soldiers are our 'heroes', but they still take slaves and use crucifixion as a means to extract information from innocent people because, well, thats what Roman soldiers did. Morally, they are all beneath contempt, but thats with my nice twenty first century blinkers on. Its good stuff, though.

As for the flicks, I've seen two really dumb action flicks, The Island and Stealth. I didn't expect much of Stealth, but The Island should have been better. It was very derivative, but its idea is a good one, and it should have done more with it. I don't see why you get actors who can really act, and then just make them run and run and run for what seems like forever. Still, Scarlett looks damn hot when she's running, so I guess its okay.

Paul, who hasn't had a chance to watch much of Wanted yet, has seen some of Prison Break (which is full of nonsense but is fun in a 24 kind of way), and is starting, at last, to watch Conviction. Looking forward to seeing how Spooks survives without the main cast, and also want to know when Bodies is back. And I can't be the only one who thought that Messiah this year was just an exercise is how to kill people in grotesque ways. The pay off just wasn't good enough, and the reasons were pretty poor and unbelievable. And it actually missed Forbes, who was always more interesting when she didn't speak, and who is showing up as Cain in an upcoming episode of Battlestar Galactica. Those in the know will know, if you know what I mean.

Phew, that was a long one.

Must say how much i liked last night ep of the Shield.

Is Shane playing Mackey or Mitchell? or both? How will Mackey react when he knows Dutch is seeing his ex? Will Aceveda's extra-marital shenanigans be discovered, and will whoever does use them as leverage?

I want to avoid the official website synopses as it's just so darn compelling.

g, who agrees that Carnivale could have built and built for 5-6 seasons before the full story had been uncovered. I guess american audiences don't like the slow build.

Ended up watching Death of Celebrity last night for my sins. Found it odd that Piers Morgan (i think it is) praised kaiser chiefs, seth lakeman, and michael gambon for their talent and berated reality tv celebs calum best and abi titmuss for their lack of talent masqueraded by conquests in the very tabloid press he was worked on?

is it sour grapes due to him being sacked, or did he have to hide his true views just to appease his readership?

g, toying with the Spooks two-parter or Carnivale. May torrent one and watch the other. or both.

oh, and never been much of a cricket fan till this series, but hurrah!!

Bodies is back on BBC3 on 17 September at 10.10 pm. Yay.

Almost forgot Spooks was on. Can't wait, although they'll really have to pull it out of the bag for it to top last season's 24.

I don't think Shane is playing Mackey. He looked too sincere. The bloke was close to crying. I hate what's happened to Aceveda, not just the prostitute-abusing but his power trips and sneakiness when it comes to the department and screwing over Rawlings. And Vic is going to batter Dutch.

More like they don't like too weird or too oblique (Twin Peaks being another example). I guess we'll never get to see it here on terrestrial.

Morgan opted in his latter years at The Mirror to move way from celeb stuff and deal in serious news. I wonder if he regrets the decision?

Did anyone watch Medium (Tuesdays BBC1)? I kind of liked it. A bit "hokey" but I liked the lead character. And she has my No 2 Perfect TV Husband (sweet, supportive, funny etc - my No 1 Perfect TV Husband being Tom Scavo from Desperate Housewives).

well in the absence of Sam, Duckface will do for Spooks.

Wait and see how thinks work for Zaf (sp?) but it looks like he's the plucky sidekick that Adam Carter's always going to have to bail out.
Always worries me how they write strong for the lead, and not the remaining cast. Ruth seemed the emotional type and the tech guys were just there.

got the entire season of Carnivale, once I get something that has ICM.XVID

I've tried XVID 2:2, just plays the sound

Possible Spooks spoilers:

He looks like he's fifteen in his hoodies. Bit brash and over confident. Easy to look at though. <g>

I think they write Ruth rather well. She's my favourite character. I think she actually has more depth than Adam. Realistically he would have left Martine there as soon as blink - he has a wife and child to think of. Yet in the Spooks black/white world, you're either very very good or very very bad. Ruth getting the cat feed is a small way to show her humanity. Adam being prepared to sacrifice himself just to hand-hold some girl he met 24 hours ago is bashing us over the head with his moral superiority and high principle.

But hey, I love the show!

Hyperdrive looks good. I always forget to read the Guardian media section, so it is always good when someone posts a link to it as it makes me read the rest Smile

Thought this was interesting - though I'd hate to see the BBC or C4 pilot shows, only to have them dumped immediately.

No I won't be that cruel! Big Grin

I agree though, by this stage in the series it really is so d@mn compelling. Just about to catch up on another FX new show today as I'm ill in bed (like I needed an excuse! lol) with the new Bochco show "Over There", you been watching this yet Paul? Any thoughts? Reviews do seem to be mixed but that mainly seems to be down to the "real" US soldiers views on the reality of the Iraq war compared to the show's take on it. I know most Yanks are a bit naive but they do know it's TV I take it? lmao

The Shield was indeed great this season. Glenn Close was fantastic, and while they still haven't got past the inherent problem of having a hero who kills other cops, it is compulsive, and lots and lots of fun. Still want Claudette to take them all down in the end, though.

As for Over There, I haven't had a chance to watch it. Don't really know what I think about a programme about a war thats ongoing, but doesn't do the politics. Its the politics thats interesting about the whole thing, isn't it?

And some on topic news for a change, from the Guardian
http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,7493,1574308,00.html

Wanted is another I have but haven't watched. I saw the pilot, and really liked it, but haven't had a chance to go any further with it. Good that its getting to ITV4 so quick, though. And Larry Sanders - FANTASTIC!

Paul, who was in Bratislava for a stag do last weekend. Something eerie about eating breakfast before you go to bed. Getting too old for such marathon drinking sessions! Wouldn't go back to Bratislava either. Very cheap, but very Soviet Union as well. Not a lot to do really, but drink like fools for 60p a pint.

Nice link Paul, nice to see Homicide is on the list too! Kojak was very good indeed also.

As for Over There, I've just watched the first 3 and have to say it really is stunning stuff in every department! The characters are great, the plots so far are very good and as regards leaving out the politics it's probably not such a bad thing as this is a drama that plays on the heart and the morals of what is right & wrong. Trust me, it really is very powerful stuff and IMHO could be the best thing Bochco has ever done period.

Btw, does anybody know when S4 of the mighty Curb your Enthusiasm is out on DVD?

Don't know about Bodies as I am waiting for the Saturday BBC2 repeat.

As for the Shield - two cops disappear. Prime suspect is Mitchell. Shane and Ronnie go to retrieve the dead girl's body and she's been moved. The missing cops turn up dead. Rawling overhears Lem getting info on which airport Mitchell will be at so sends people out to get him. Vic and Shane intercept him, offer to find him a new heroin supplier in exchange for a truce/the dead girl's body. At the end of the episode they bring him into the station promising that they won't let the interrogation get out of hand.

What with More4 and ITV4, the future's looking promising for progs to watch.

Is there anything not repeated at the moment that anyone wants picked up?

re: the shield - was anything furthered with Vic/his ex/Dutch?

Ok, Spooks last night,

did Zaf put Ruth and Adam in danger last night with his call from 'establishment', or do we suspect the politican got the real tip-off from duckface?

also, what in the word has gone on with House? I miss a few weeks and the money man is exercising some control and wants a member of House's team gone, but not chase as he's been piping him with information, even though he's the least favourable to House. I like it though, it adds to

g, who agrees that Dr. Cutty is attractive in an aesthetically authorative kind of way.

Also wish i'd seen the first few eps of Artschool, as i thought it was pretty involving programming, and was impressed with the character in everyone's work.

I got up this morning at 7am intending to put in a full day at work (from home of course). Did some shopping first (£20 to dry clean my winter coats! Should have just bought a new one), had lunch, read the paper, watched a bit of Hollyoaks. It's now 4.30pm. I have no discipline.

Anyway, garbarek wrote

I don't think Duckface was involved. It was either Zaf's call or the bloke just figured it out for himself. I guess MI5 dirty tricks campaigns happen all the time.

It was all a bit, "this bloke donated some money, so lets give him the hospital quick".

Thank god. Now I can stop feeling guilty about keeping Paul's tapes so long he let me have them!
