I think its more to do with their rarity - there are less in everyday circulation and therefore people are less likely to know what they look like than smaller notes such as tenners, fivers etc. If they came by a forgery they would be less likely to detect it. Same goes for say Scottish tenners in the south of england and Irish tenners on the English side of the Irish sea. THey are all legal tender but some shops wont accept them cos they see so few of them they wouldnt know a forgery (unless it was realy obvious of course)
