Question:
Strictly speaking I am going by the books but the films are good too, Me and my friend have a very heated debate on the subject as I say it's Gandalf The White but he doesn't agree but doesn't know who is so what are your opinions, as well as voting please leave a reason and I will state my reasons as this develops!

Sauron
Galadriel
Elrond

I'm a bit torn with this to be honest. It's between Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf. I think they're all just as powerful in different ways.

I'm torn between Elrond and Galadrial cos Elrond reforged the sword and without the army of the dead they would have lost the war. Galadriel is my fave as she defeated the Nazgul King who would have killed Gandalf.....Ahem that my two cents on the matter

Gandalf is the weilder of the ring of fire(Narya) and the head of the Istari wizzards, Beholder of the word of power and a decendent of the gods of middle earth(The Ainor). As far as Magics go the witch king of agmar was the most powerfull but is a slave to souron whileGandalf has free will!

It's Sauron.

Sauron was a Maia, and in his heyday had armies of Balrogs at his command.

Gandalf was the most powerful Istari, and was more powerful than any Elf, yet he had a hard time defeating just one Balrog.

ergo, the answer is Sauron.

Yes Gandalf the Grey had a hard time defeating the Balrog not Gandalf the White. Also there were 12 Balrogs with Gothmog being their leader not Sauron!

I've still not decided who I think is the most powerful in LOTR.

Just looked over my reply - embarassed to realise I was talking about Eowyn not galdrial. If she hadn't intervened Gandalf would have been killed by the nazgul king and the city would have been taken.

So it's between Eowyn and Elrond!
