I definitely reckon the Omen is scarier than the Exorcist - more psychologically scary and well-paced, whilst the exorcist is more in your face. What do you think? Im not talking about the Omen remake grrrrr
If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere
The Omen is scarier in the way that it makes you think this guy would actually go and kill the kid he has raised, when Damien was screaming "Daddy, Daddy Stop Daddy Please!" on the alter it was really disturbing.
The Exorcist is the scariest even the parts where Regans not possesed. The scariest scene for me is when she has to take the brain test at the hospital, the needle, blood and the noise of the machine.
I dont think they can be seperated, both are equally scary but in different ways, The Exorcist is a very High on the Visual impact and over the top side of the possession and the whole exorcism side of it.
Where as the Omen is more the taunting the nerves and thumping heart kind of scary with the epitomy of evil being this small boy and his parents struggle and the whole feeling of the film is quite dark and brooding.
hav u seen the directors cut of the exorcist?? the bit where she crawls down the stairs?....OH MAN !! n this was b4 the grudge movie was even thought of .......

Two great movies, but The Omen just edges it for me.
Like someone earlier said, it has more psychological elements to it, making it (for me) that bit scarier. And in the climate we live in, it's not so unlikely for someone (the anti-Christ) to rise to power politically and be considered an evil force (but that's another topic and Omen movie altogether!).
I'm certainly not religious, but these strong aspects of The Omen and The Exorcist still affect me, even having seen them countless times over the years.

I've now seen The Omen and i found that The Exorcist scared me more...that film just gets me every time!! I suppose tho with The Omen it's not what you see but more what you don't see that scares you!!
The Omen is the scarier because it does not rely on special effects. The Omen is not devoid of special effects but it is essentially a psycholgical thriller and most of the horror comes from the viewers own imagination.
The Exorcist these days looks a bit dated. My teenage daughters did not find it in the least bit scarey obviously because they have become immune to the state of the art special effects used in most modern day horror movies.
where the exorcist ends fairly happilly, the omen has a family destroyed-happens each film of trilogy- by a conspiracy to place the anti christ into a postion of supreme power, a process that can't be stopped and is even biblically predicted.

plus the fact that knowing his identity will lead to a gory death, usually invoving machinery of some kind.

Yes the Directors Cut is pretty cool.
Exorcist was one of those films I saw when I was just a kid and not supposed to watch LOL, but watched it a few times now am an adult and to be honest I laugh at it now as there is some funny bits in it (Weird Sense Of Humour Though), but when you watch something like that as a kid its much different
The Omen thought was good but very slow, exorcist was slow too but the fact it is filmed in the light and not the dark like most horror movies, just makes it better than the omen for me
