Hello Rich, though swearing is frowned upon in the forums, in general, swearing within competitions should be ok. Obviously the context of the swearing has a lot to do with whether it's acceptable or not. I would advise against using the "c" word though, and an over-reliance on swearing should be avoided.
Also if someone (anyone) reads it, can someone tell me if the 'you're fired' bit is unknowingly plagurised from somewhere - i just have a nagging feeling i've heard it before somewhere.
and the Trumpster of course - but is there a 'you're fired' bit in Curb your Enthusiasm, as thats where i think it may be from - if there isn't then i'm in the clear.
People don't need swearing to make a sketch funny per say but It can make a joke funnier I find If lee evans did'nt swear he would still make me laugh but the swearing give's the jokes an extra kick
Thanks for the patronising advice mv, tell it to Derek and Clive. And I'm sure the end of the 'Grand Opening' episode of Series 3 of Curb would be just as funny if they all just said bum or something. This sketch doesn't depend on swearing to be funny (indeed it may not be funny even with swearing in it) it's just it happens to be an attempted reflection of a real conversation in which, shock horror, people do sometimes swear. Of course, i could have replaced the f word with 'having sex', but it wouldn't have flowed as well - if we can't swear then i won't but if we can, and it works, why not do it?
I wasnt talking about your sketch, I was talking about the subject of swearing in comedy in general and people who confuse swearing with being funny. It wasnt a dig at you, or your sketch, or you as a writer, it was a personal comment on swearing in general. Yes I also have occasional swear words in sketches, my point was aimed at the the assumption that some people have that using swear words is in itself always funny and/or vital to a piece, when often its superfluous. So thanks for getting the hump instead of just asking me to clarify what I meant and if it was actually a dig at you. It was a general thought on the use of swearing and was not meant for you in particular. Christ, people take things the wrong way easily on these forums.
Fair enough mv. Didn't realise it wasn't a personal dig. Personally, I think if your sketch hinges on someone having a silly name to be funny then you're in trouble!
