Er, I wouldn't know about on the forum as I haven't been looking around. Been too busy drinking tea and looking at handbags, saying "ooh, lovely" a lot while trying to eat a bag of magic stars without anyone noticing that I'm eating them cause if no one sees me, I won't get fat cause it DOESN'T COUNT and I won't have to join a circus as the amazing hippo woman and marry a dwarf, so it's been tough.

I did surrealism and the avant garde at university (Okay, who said "a-ha!" like that?) so ya would think I would be able to come up with something smart and clever that would make you think of me as one of those women who read a lot of art books, wear Doc Martins, and smoke a pipe as a symbol of my rebellion against, I dunno, facist monkeys or something.

Right, away, all my tiny yokel mind can think of at this moment is have you tried looking at some "Surreal" stand ups and acts, looking at the processes they go through. Reeves and Mortimer, Eddie Izzard, Ross Noble, etc. Surrealism is a pain to define because to try and explain it can be the opposite of what it is so you give up and carry on watching Eastenders.

Wandering off again......so, um, just look at as many different things as to can for contrast is all I can say. I sure most people here can help you better than me but I will tap on the side of my brain's jar and send you anything I think of because I'm nice and smell like violets.

GS you are very strange but I like you. Smile

As for surreal, I would say this is the what most of my work is. Take a look deep in the test bed for some of my stuff if you like.

Example of surrealism in a public transport context: Two hit-men are standing at a bus-stop arguing about the cost of petrol. The bus pulls up but neither of the men has anything smaller than a £20 on him. They get into an argument with the bus driver when he refuses to give up all his change. They end up shooting him and all the other people on the bus before going off to hire push-bikes. They find that a tandem works out cheaper.

Surreal basically means what wouldn't happen or what would only happen in a crazy mixed up world. Look at things backwards.

This is the way I see surrealism anyway. Feel free to correct me if I've gotten anything wrong here.

I hope I've been some help.

Writing comedy is like taking a dump.

Don't force it or you might end up with something that isn't very funny at all...

Thinking about it, the example I gave is probably a cross between observational and surreal comedy. I guess there are degrees of surrealism and it can be mixed with other types of comedy too.

In art, Surrelism is the chance meeting of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table.

Off the wall stuff.

An offshoot is Dadaism (french for GAGA apparently) meaning just crazy/ mad. Things you would normally associate with each other. Salvador Dali is the most familiar exponent in art and he was crazy. His paintings were so unbelievable that he had to paint them in a photographic style to encourage the viewer to believe what they were seeing- 'Extra Real' or 'On-Real'in fact in order to convince us. Translate that into french and you get Surreal.

There you go!
So anything goes- the madder the better- Pythonesque.

But please darling, don't confuse it with the metaphysical painters such as de Chirico. Heaven forbid. As if........

Missyou25 - You may not have seen Spike Milligan stuff but some of his were definitely the most surreal I can think of.
Ask yer grandad- or Frankie Rage.

It means taking something to a rediculous extrme, looking at something from an odd angle, juxtoposing seemingly clashing ideas and thoughts and making them work together. Or just being plain of your face freaky weird.

But not to the point where you go outside with melons for shoes, a green romper suit, and wielding a "magic" flute made of ham.

Man, that was a fun day out in Bath.....
