We have been looking around, we got a quote from B&Q for £8000, but it doesn't cover everything. Plus our budget is only £6000 maximum.

Can someone suggest somewhere reasonable.

how big is your kitchen and what is your spec?

I haven't fitted one myself but am thinking about it. there have been previous threads on here about kitchens and this sounds pretty expensive? My eyes Eek when I saw it!

I want someone to measure it as well as as fit it. Tile the walls, but everything with B&Q is extra, ridiculous.

I will hunt for the kitchen thead. Thanks.

I would recommend that you wait (shouldn't be long!) for one of those continuously recurring half price sales at MFI for your units and fitting BUT you should always source your appliances separately and get flooring and tiling done by your own people. This will give you a much greater choice and much more competitive overall cost. I sourced my appliances via the internet, chose flooring & tiling locally and had everything fitted by local tilers/plumbers/electricians. Very pleased with the outcome.

I read an article recently in the Sunday Times, can't remember the writer's name, but she said she wanted a budget kitchen and got a quote from MFI. The quote was £10,000 including appliances and she thought this was much too expensive, so she went to IKEA, much against her inclination, just to see. They quoted £3,000 for an identical kitchen, including appliances, delivery and fitting. She is now in heaven, and has fallen in love with IKEA. Wink

Our kitchen is about 5m x 3m .. our kitchen, including units, lighting, tiling, flooring, dish washer, oven and painting has come to around about £2.5k.

The units run around 3 sides of roughly a 3m square... with enough space at the end for a breakfast table & built in cupboard.

We have the following units (just for comparison)
1000 high line sink unit
Carousel high line corner unit
1000 high line corner unit
300 high line base unit
600 drawer unit
- plus space available for washer/dryer, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and oven.

2x 600 wall unit
2x 500 wall units (above sink)
2x corner cabinets
300 wall unit
Corner shelf

We got the units from MFI... the worktop from Homebase... the wall tiles from wallsandfloors.co.uk... the floor tiles from B&Q... the sink from plumb world and the appliances from places like curries/comet etc

And we fitted it ourselves. I get the impression that the cost can pretty much double when you get someone else to fit it.

From the experience of doing this one ourselves.. I think that next time we'll do everything the same but pay someone else to fit the worktop.

I've just bought a kitchen from Wickes which we found cheaper than B&Q. We're doing the flooring and tiling ourselves though and have a friend who 'fits kitchens' each weekend, doing the fitting (with help from us) for £500.

Finest - shop around and don't be too hasty

Get at least three different companies to visit your home and discuss your needs. These days they can use computer images to show you your design before you choose which you prefer.

Kitchen prices are so very very expensive and will vary depending on which firm you use. Don't be frightened to let the most expensive company know you are shopping around and tell them you've found another company who are prepared to do the job cheaper.

My kitchen was fitted in 1983 and still looks good, but we paid a lot for ours and that makes all the difference.

Hope you find your dream kitchen soon.

Somebody is bound to mentions Howdens - the trade arm of MFI. The units are pre built and your local joiner should be able to install them no problem.

If you have a rough idea what you want try planning it yourself. You can use the IKEA kitchen planner to help (http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/rooms_ideas/kitchen/download.html). The assistants in my local IKEA are also very good when it come to planning kitchens - make appointment (weekdays are quiter).

To be honest, if your kitchen is fairly straight forward you could have a go at installing it yourself - it isn't rocket science. The only tricky bits are the mitred worktop joints - it would be worth getting a profession to do these.

P.S. i got my oven and hob from B&Q - an in store special package deal that nobody else could beat - so it isn't always worth buying them seperately.

The subject of kitchens does come up every few weeks on here and I think I always say the same thing. In years gone by it was cheaper to get your cabinets from one place, appliances from another etc. etc. but not anymore. If your after a fitted look in the kitchen ie. integrated appliances, you get a better deal from one place. I know your not allowed to advertise but you do get the best deal at MFI at the moment. They are currently not bothered about profit because the retail arm is stuggling so turnover is key for them! I had a kitchen on Saturday that for once worked out cheaper at Howdens, by £300. I phoned MFI to tell them and they knocked £400 off the order to get it! I was partically pleased as the kitchen was only £1400!! Crazy deals!
