A semi a few numbers up the road has just had it's roof painted red cedar ! I didn't see it being done but apparently it was spray applied. All the houses in the road have grey concrete tiles so this does stand out. If you ignore the fact that the adjoining house still has a standard weathered tile roof it looks quite smart in a stone cladding sort of way
I've heard of painting shingles or tin (I have seen a tin roof - must be awful when it hails) but not tiles. Has anyone else seen this done?

Are you sure it's paint ?
I lived in a house once which had a red roof, casued by the application of a rubberised covering onto the tiles. It was all the fad at one stage, but I suspect has rather gone out of fashion as it was very difficult to identify the source of any leaks in the rubber coating - the water would run down between the coating and the tiles and emerge in a separate place entirely.

Why would someone do this? Is it the roofing equivalent of stone cladding
