I was unnerved the other day by someone taking a shortcut through my garden. I have a six foot fence but he climbed it with ease.
Is that plastic gripper rod any good?
Would lattice panels on top of the fence be a deterrant?

Lattice panels is usually whats recommended by the crime prevention bods - plus it doesn't make your garden look like Stalag Luft 17...

Plant some pyracantha or berberis against the fence. It'll take a little while to grow tall, but no-one will want to risk being ripped apart by thorns. Big Grin

Proud to say I can get over a six foot fence in high heels. Remnant of a misspent youth ;-)

Did you ask him (I'm assuming it was a bloke) exactly why he climbed a 6 foot fence in order to take a short cut through your garden?

I don't know if the plastic gripper rods are any good but I have to say they never look like a terribly effective deterrent to me. Lattice would raise the height and would be more likely to break if you tried to climb it, which I think would put people off. If I were you I'd do a combination of lattice and a really prickly type of plant growing up the fence and visible through the lattice. Should take care of it.

I agree RSteve - our end-fence backs on to an alleyway, and we have trellis panels on top of the 6ft fence, with a very prolific climbing rose growing through it. So it's pretty and also makes it burglar-and-fox-proof.

Try attaching carpet grippers to the top of fence-no one will climb it with these in place...

You can get special paint which does not dry properly and makes a real mess if anyone tries to climb over. It is also slippery.

They use it on the metal spikes on top of the wall around Buckingham Palace.
