I was unnerved the other day by someone taking a shortcut through my garden. I have a six foot fence but he climbed it with ease. Is that plastic gripper rod any good? Would lattice panels on top of the fence be a deterrant?
Plant some pyracantha or berberis against the fence. It'll take a little while to grow tall, but no-one will want to risk being ripped apart by thorns.
I don't know if the plastic gripper rods are any good but I have to say they never look like a terribly effective deterrent to me. Lattice would raise the height and would be more likely to break if you tried to climb it, which I think would put people off. If I were you I'd do a combination of lattice and a really prickly type of plant growing up the fence and visible through the lattice. Should take care of it.
I agree RSteve - our end-fence backs on to an alleyway, and we have trellis panels on top of the 6ft fence, with a very prolific climbing rose growing through it. So it's pretty and also makes it burglar-and-fox-proof.
