Perhaps a change of ownership/name/became limited?? in Y2K?....or you could always ask them? If they're reputable I'm sure they wouldn't be offended that you've checked them out...Good luck! (by the way, don't know what area you are in but I'm in the midlands and used a double glazing company last year that I would recommend)

Maybe they were trading as sole traders or under a partnership before then? I think you only register at Companies House when you become a limited company?

Yes, that was my understanding as well. It could be that he started out 20 years ago as a self-employed tradesman and then switched to a limited company in 2000 when the business was big enough

Thanks - I'll speak to them now and check. At least I didn't find that they'd gone into liquidation and set up again I suppose!

Yup, he said they were operating on a sole trader basis for 15 years first. We're going down to see the factory next week so hopefully that'll definitely put my mind at rest - you can make up letterheads for pence but you can't assemble a window factory overnight Let's hope the weekend is as nice weather as today! I'm working at home but am typing up transcripts on my PC so sadly can't do that from the park either
