Where do they find these people? More money than sence and the brass neck to argue. Why invite these people in and then spend all your time arguing with them?
Fear. People think interior design is hokus pocus and their opinion is as valid as the next person's (who spent six years studying and another ten practicing). They don't try it on with consultant surgeons or even car mechanics but designers are fair game. Tragic, like their mirror.
£12,000 for the building work All they had was a wall knocked down & a fireplace bricked up !! I know they had the fireplaces replastered but £12k !! We had building work done recently including knocking down a structural wall, a non supporting wall, bricking up an external door, creating an internal door, levelling the floor & putting a damp membrane in as well as some other bits & bobs - the lot came in at £3800 with an extra £500 for plastering a room 22' x 10'. Funny how the Cleaver came in on budget even after them spending a whopping £1,000 on a sink (my whole bathroom cost half of that much !) And £2000 for a downstairs loo ... just put one in with all the plumbing & everything for under £500 !! At the end of the day, they've spent £85k on an extension which has only added £90k to the value of the house. But at the end of the day as long as they are happy there & are pleased with the result, that's all that matters but ripping that fireplace out was tragic imho !!
I was quiet vexed last night ... lots of shouting at the TV & Mr Cheeky now thinks I'm totally nuts (if he didn't do before !!)
I thought some of the quoted prices were very high and overpriced myself but there again this is Bexleyheath and labour charges are much higher than most of the rest of the Country. Explains probably, why there are 300,000 Eastern Europeans banging on the door of Britain looking for work.....and so would I be if I was a qualified Bricky in Bulgaria earning a £100 on a good week. The overall effect was quite good compared to what they had already and some of the design idea's of course made complete sense but to be honest anyone with a limited knowledge of design could have achieved exactly the same, if not better, result from a bit of research. You do not need to employ people like Ms Cleaver to design something as basic as this within a proeprty, assuming of course that Ms. Cleaver charges some huge amount of Dosh for her expertise and time. I didn't like that kitchen - I thought the units were horrible. And as for that picture of their son - it would have looked far better hung on the wall rather than leant against it.....
First time I've seen this, and what a stinking pile of contrived doo doo it is. Ms Cleaver pronounces vowells like the lovechild of Brian Sewell and Lloyd Grossman. Irritating isn't the word.
As for the electric tagging - I nearly wet myself laughing. Mind you, next time I'm threatened with an ASBO for my continual and improper disposal of the Sports section of the Sunday Times, I might ask to be tagged instead so long as I can have the print-out at the end. Will save me a fortune when we re-plan our house.

Am I gulible? Is the show supposed to be a skit and I missed the joke? I do hope so.
House and design was naff in the extreme (and SO pleased we were privilaged with a glimpse of her very own gaff) but I suspect that is incidental to the whole proceedings. Where on earth does C4 find these people????

The tagging is an updated version of what was done on another show (can't think which one) where they install a camera for a couple of days to record where people spend most of their time. I agree it seems contrived, as does the entire show.
But I love La Cleaver. And although a lot of people would indeed have been able to achieve a decent result without interior designer on board, this lot certainly wouldn't.
Thought it looked fine afterwards, nothing startling, but then she was hampered by the fact they were so timid and unimaginative.
Worst crime (not Cleaver's fault): taking out the original fireplace.
Another vote for Cleaver. As much as I love La Beeny her joyless dominatrix act is wearing a bit thin. NC looks as though she actually likes people. And better now the fake bun has gone.
