Hi all

Mr H and I are vaguely considering a house which has quite a few outbuildings, including an open-sided barn, stables, a shed, another random shed, etc. This is the big put-off to the house - lovely house, with view onto sheds, barn, concrete running up to barn etc.

First of all, is there any advantage to having all these outbuildings? As far as I'm concerned, one garden shed, good. One general storage place, good. Anything else is more than enough. I notice that the estate agents are very much not mentioning the stables and barn, so clearly no one else seems to want them either!

And secondly, any idea how much it costs to have someone knock down and remove an open-sided barn and dig up a concrete track to it?

Frankly, I think all this would cost so much and be so much effort that the house stops being in any way finished or good value for money :-)

Grateful for any views...

Hatster

Well, my father-in-law says cheerily that it's just a case of hiring a man + JCB!

Barns are good for dances, and I've always found stables quite useful for horses Big Grin

I second the hiring of a JCB, but the temptation to smash the hell out of everything myself would be too great to pay someone else and pass the fun over to them.
I watched the man smashing the big church across from us down to the ground. What a job. I'd jump at the chance!

Why not leave them, that way they are a precedent for building permission in the future - should the need arise

In the meantime if there's some land with them, wouldn't the stables rent out?

Not the same thing I know, but my sister-in-law paid around £500 for someone to remove an old garage and break up the concrete (I think they helped to shift it). This sort of stuff doesn't come cheap.
