Thinking of having these in the new house. Does anyone else have them and how do you like them? Do they cut out a lot of light and are they too figity (sp)? or are they an ideal alternative to verticals?

I had them in every room in my last house - I think they are ideal, especially if you have small windows. They're very tidy & not at all fidgety to open & close.

Don't get them made bespoke though - they cost a fortune & they're so easy to make yourself. I'm not particularly handy with a sewing m/c, but I still managed to do a decent job & run up a blind in an afternoon. Places like Dunelm sell all the tapes, cords etc that you need.

We have them and they're very elegant and fairly minimalist, I think - but are you really thinking about Roman blinds? Your description of them as an alternative to verticals doesn't sound much like what we have. Ours are just a sheet of fabric which come down in loops from above the window. They don't block out any light during the day.

Thanks
My mum is going to make them for me but she was a bit unsure as she has never made roman blinds before. However she has made all her own curtains, all ours in the last house and pelmets bedspreads etc.....hopefully these will not be a problem for her then!
Did you find they blocked out a lot of light as they hang quite low down on the window?

yup we are talking about the same thing. I guess I should have explained that one of the windows I would be putting them on is a bay window so I have to hang them from the PVC frame and not from above the window frame (on the wall) so a lot of material would hang over the window (does that make any sense Confused)

Mine didn't hang down low on the window at all. It all depends where you want the folds to be. If you (or your Mum) are making them, then just place the folds according to your personal preference. If your Mum can make curtains, she'll find the blinds a doddle!

Oh I see. My parents have exactly the same set up in that case, and I've never noticed it blocked out more light than anything else does. The ones we have are very light fabric with artistic holes in them, which might also work if you're concerned about them being too heavy.

Hi Pumpkin, I have them in most rooms (sometimes with curtains over them, sometimes on their own). I made mine, so if your mum makes curtains etc she should have no problem making roman blinds. One bit of advice for making them though (hope my description is clear enough!)... When you stich them you make horizontal panels which form the pleats when you fold them up. Make sure that the bottom panel is slightly deeper than the rest. If it is shorter you may find that when you pull the blind up and the pleats form, some of the right-side of the fabric is now facing out of the window. If this bit then fades in the sun, you will end up with a discoloured stripe in the middle of the blind (as I did on my first attempt *sigh*). Hope this makes sense!

We've inherited them in our new house and they are a total pain in the a*se.

When open they leave the window completely open and it's like you're in a goldfish bowl, and they are a nightmare to lower.

If you don't like nets (which I don't), venetians are still the most effective way of having open/closed and every degree between.

Big Grin we have moved to a very quiet street and the house sits on a slight hill so we are a little higher than the pavement if that makes sense so won't imagine I would have that problem. The back of the house is quite private and we are higher than then neighbours at the back so they aren't looking in on us....I can understand where you are coming from though!
