If these people are scaring you so much you need to go to the police.

What is a boundary spell?!

It is up to them to prove that they have a right to be demanding this information; not for me to prove that they do not.

In the meantime, I have set a Boundary Spell around my property which should discourage any attempts at forced entry.

Ary.

At the risk of having a spell cast on me !!!

Clearly telling them has not worked - I cannot see you are giving them personal information by just showing them your passport which will solve the problem immediately. Your reticence in this is causing them to doubt your word. Why allow this continual upset when YOU have the power to sort it out quickly, as Lillie-B says, being bloody minded about it is only causing you upset.

I have no proof that they are who they say they are. They have shown me no court order; no details of the alleged debt; nothing.

When I first phoned, they said that they would send me a form that I needed to fill in so that they could verify my identity. No form was sent; and when I phoned them back they denied all knowledge of any previous conversation and said they never sent out forms.

Copies of my utility bills paired with a copy of my Passport could be used fraudulently to clone my identity. I am not going to give such documentation into the hands of people who have already proved themselves to be liars.

I phoned the council they claimed to be collecting money from and reported them. The council stated that they dealt with several different companies and couldn't confirm if the one harassing me was genuine unless I could give them a valid reference number. The reference number on the letter that they sent to me is not a valid one. (It's not even a valid number to the number listed on the letter from the "Bailieffs"!)

The council legal department also said that the "Bailiffs" could not legally force their way into my house, and if anybody tried to do that, I should call the Police.

I am not being bloody minded. I am protecting myself against potential shysters.

Ary.

A Boundary Spell is a Spell that you set around the boundaries of your property. In my case, this one is set to give anyone attempting forced entry the heebie jeebies so much that they will hopefully run away screaming before they get as far as Trespass and Burglary.

I saw this thread and got rather worried about whether it would happen to us! I have just been to sign contracts for our first house today and I thought I would ask the solicitor about it. He said that the searches that they do are not going to show up whether the current owners are in bad debt - the only thing he said was to keep a copy of the deeds and show them to the bailiffs as proof of purchase (think someone has said this before). He also said to make sure you have disassociated yourself with the previous occupiers by contacting equifax or experian and telling them you are nothing to do with them. Sorry you are having trouble with this - it would drive me crackers! Just thought I'd share this with you all.

Unfortunately, there is no way to ensure this sort of harassment doesn't happen. People give fake addresses out all the time when they obtain credit. In this case, this person apparently never paid council tax... funny that, given that they may never have lived in my house Roll Eyes

I thought this was something that I would not have to put up with, having finally moved from rented into owned accommodation. But apparently not.

My poor brother bought his new house from people who were selling to clear a debt, but there were so many Bailiffs calling and threatening to remove their possessions that he had to label his property with his name so that if they did break in they would hopefully leave his stuff alone!

There ought to be a legal obligation on Bailiffs to check registered ownership whenever they are told that the previous owners have moved out. I am sure that would cut out a lot of this unpleasantness aimed at blameless parties.

I helped out an elderly client recently who was getting these threatening letters. Someone had run up all these debts in Sunderland and had then given the company a forwarding address of a random house in Cheshire! The poor woman was in her 80's and hysterical because she had never been in debt in her life. The company told her baliffs were going to take all her stuff - the b*s!£$%£!!! It was suprisingly easy to sort out though - the company took my word for it and took the address off the records.

Feel for everyone being hassled by baliffs for a debt that is not theirs. However I suppose baliffs are used to being lied to - no thats not me, never heard of them, they've moved out etc. But that does not justify some of the actions written about on here nor does it justify failing to make simple checks into who owns the property. As for Aryldi's experience -WTF is going on there! I hope this is resolved for you asap. What an awful story. Keep us posted as to what happens following on from your phone call.

a court can give anyone permission to enter your home inc British gas etc lol

its very very rare for a court to give permission to a debt agency and it isn't done lightly for obv reasons....... a court wont issue permission without absolute prove of residency

So I'm out shopping with OH. Get to checkout. If you take out a shopcard you get 10% discount, club with members only offers, etc - are we interested? Anyway its a shop we use quite often and the bill will be paid off before interest accrues. Well we have only been in this house for three/four months so we had to give our previous address as well (in that five months). And the form of ID they required - a visa card with my signiture.

No wonder its so easy. I could have given valid ID and a false address, or 'borrowed' the credit card as the signiture on the card was not checked against the form filled in. But maybe this is what you get when you employ a girl who didn't look old enough to be able to drive to the out of town retail park she was employed at.

Aryldi,
What an awful time you are having. From what you've said these bailiffs are behaving very badly and I really think you need to register a complaint with the police or at least phone them to find out what your rights are. Its possible this firm is already known to them. I quite understand your reluctance to give them personal documents - I wouldn't do it either. Good luck and don't let the ******'s gets you down.

Thanks. I haven't heard anything from them now for a week... so no form to fill in to prove my identity... but possibly more threats that haven't been delivered because I am refusing to accept other people's mail.

I don't have the energy to report these people to the Police. If they start knocking on my door, then I shall call in the Law.

Ary.

Update:

They are still sending letters. I am still refusing to accept any mail through my letterbox that is not addressed to me or my boyfriend (Postman returns them all for me). Nobody has tried to break in... yet... baffled that they are still sending the letters though.... what are they waiting for? Me to move out and some vulnerable Pensioner to move in who will pay up out of fear?

What a horrible horrible situation to be in Aryldi. Frown

If that was me I would drill the message into whoever is sending the bailiffs VERY STRONGLY that the debtor(s) no longer live there: get them to write the message down, repeat it over the phone and then to update their records accordingly. Mad Thick b*****ds!

I am tired, I am weary. I could sleep for a thousand years.

This is so not on..

I agree with you Ary, I would not give them anything with name or photo on. For all you know they could be fraudsters..

My vote goes to calling the police too, they tend to be extremely attentive to females living on their own. Once I called them up as someone tried to break into the place we live in while I was still at home. I was so scared I called them up there were there in less than 15 minutes. The guy turned out to be a builder who had keys for the flat upstairs but got the numbers mixed up Roll Eyes

We had 3 lots of baillifs looking for our vendors after we moved in. We sent all the letters back to sender saying they were no longer at the address - 2 of the companies phoned up asking for proof that they had gone, so we faxed them a copy of our council tax statement, and another came round to the house - Mr Catso showed them some ID and off they went. Haven't heard back from any of them since.

Ary - here is a good tip if you are worried about them breaking in - get one of those signs with a rottweiler on which says "break in make my day".

That should put them off of that line of action!!

LOL!

Thanks for that. So far I am just ignoring them though and refusing to receive their letters. Anyone breaking in is a criminal... and my neighbours know what I look like, so will soon call the Police if anyone other than me looks to be entering my house... it's been nearly 2 years now... one would have thought that they would have given up by now, realising that someone else is here and paying council tax, and therefore whoever they claim is living here and Not paying council tax clearly.. well... only an idiot would fail to make the connection Roll Eyes
