...if I can get away with only doing half of my proposed kitchen/study extension?
The thing is I don't want to spend the best part of 20 grand putting up a two room, single story extension on my house when I'm most likely going to sell it in a couple of years. I was going to have a kitchen and a study next to it, but now all I want to do it put up the kitchen part of the plans.
Will planning let me do this? Of course I'm going to write to them and get their answer in writing. But I just wondered if any of you knowledgable people had any idea if I could do this?
If the plans change substantially from what you have applied for then your should inform the council. As you are creating a smaller rather than a larger extension however, I wouldn't imagine you would have any problem form them. They will probably just say fine go for it. You can then finish your smaller extension, and sell the house with the advantage of having already had permission to do a larger extension.
