He appears to have all the trappings of his calling; condescending, portentious, self-important but I find him rather aimiable in a twitchy, over the shoulder, you haven't seen me way. Perhaps because he seems genuinely enthusiastic about the projects if not the people. Pretty much how I'd feel, really but with added louchness.
I am quite amazed that you are so boiled up about KMC, is this a bloke thing as my husband twitches a bit about him? He does agree that KMC has taken on and criticised architects in a way no one else could have but also raised the profile of their profession and has done a huge amount to stimulate peoples interest in the built environment.
Maybe it is that he is rather multi-talented, speaks quite a few languages, has been an opera singer, has trained in architecture and has a good eye for design but isn't gay and therefore a threat!!! I love watching GD but hate the music, the pretentiousness of the chats about the build but am aware it's the way they think TV works. Having heard KMC on the radio I have to admit he can make you interested in anything, even new housing estates in places you have never been. I think he deserves some credit for tackling issues that have probably left our country 20 years, at least behind others ie: house design, sustainability and planning for the future.
Do I fancy him? No. Do I think he is a nice and interesting person? Yes.
Simey the only bit I really have to take you up on is your statement ref' other peoples hard work' Sorry but most of them have no idea of hard work and dont do the work themselves, they merely purchase the time of others to create what they are unable to achieve themselves, personally I prefere the "sweat equity" route Mike
well - I thought he was ok on tv until I read some of the garbage he has written! Then he really does come across as a pompous patronising prat. I particularly loathe his contempt for the homes that the mass of the population live in - it's a bit like rolling your eyes at the dress sense of a beggar.... ... or like Marie antoinette (allegedly)suggesting that the workers should 'eat cake'.
Do you mean the huge proportion of Victorian housing we still live in in the UK or the apology for houses that developers have put up in the last 25 years? He doesn't have contempt for the homeowners but the governments that allow the poor quality design to continue being built and the developers who make huge profits short-changing their market.
Have to admit that watching the GD revisited last night I did find Kevin intensely irritating. In fact his presence in yesterday's programme seemed completely irrelevant - the chap who built the house was so articulate and interesting he could have just done the to-camera pieces himself.

It's a fine line between contempt for the inanimate house and contempt for the person who bought it and likes it! I'd say that Kevin crossed the line for me some time ago - he shows little empathy with the aspirations of the common man. I too find it hard to watch him now.
Kevin is ideal for the job - highly charismatic and knowlegeable, yet quite annoying at times too. It keeps us watching, and on our toes!
Somebody said that KMC is able to make anything sound interesting, and I agree. There aren't many broadcasters with that talent. Bill Oddie can get me entranced by water voles so he's another.
Channel 4 wouldn't be Channel 4 if their frontmen (and women) didn't try ever so slightly to get up our noses. Long may it last.
(and yes - men don't waste their time hating Lawrence LB as they know us girls would never fancy him anyway. But opera singing, design conscious men who brandish flowers and talk in seductive tones about people's hopes and dreams... no wonder they hate him!)
The radio 4 set of three programmes about Ashford's Future, broadcast a while back were very interesting and a very balanced view was narrated by KMC. I believe it is the GD format that is getting a bit tired and I'm hopeful our views on this forum will be considered for any future series.
