Does anyone know - the staircase leasing from ground floor (bungalow) into a loft conversion - do the building regs specify a minumum width? If so, what is it? Also - do building regs differ according to local authority?
Hi The Building Regulations are a set of rules covering the whole country and apply in all Council areas. My copy of the regs and approved documents dates from 2004 and is out of date although as far as I am aware there have been no significant changes in respect of stairs. Approved Doc K says that no minimum widths are given but you must have consideration to escape in the event of a fire and obviously movement of furniture is a thought. I would suggest that you download APP Doc K from HMSO website which will give you detailed info and drawings. Hopes this helps
very grateful. Its as I suspected, thing is a builder I was thinking of employing was telling me "they have to be 920mm width to pass the building regs. If I put them in any narrower than that hes gonna make me taken em right out". And it just didnt sound right to me
