What would be the point of a forum where we all just said 'well, that was entertaining'?
Well said, Shopping Girl. Couldn't have put it better myself.

OK folks. Who will show me where the money went?
What are the most expensive elements in restoring an old house? Answer - the bricks and mortar. There was no work needed.
The roof? The roof wasn't replaced. The timbers in the roof are still the same timbers. Only the purlin was replaced. Total repair bill for the roof £3,500.
The bathroom? They spent just £1500 on the bathroom.
The kitchen? They spent just £3000 on the kitchen (rubbish though it was).
Let's add that up:
£3500 + 1500 + 3000 = Just £8000 for all the most expensive elements.
That leaves £69,000 to be spent where?
Where was the £69,000 spent?
All the normally expensive stuff was done for less than £10 grand.
That house was a very good purchase if the right person had bought it.
I say that the whole thing was a set-up.
This is what really happened:
House was purchased and PL was contacted.
In true reality TV style, a deal was struck.
You make a public fool of yourself and we'll help pay for the repairs.
A builder was contracted (with a real contract) for about £45K. Builder is happy as he doesn't really do much to earn it.
Punter is happy. He get's work done on the house for £45K - but PL contibute 20K for him to look a plonker. He only pays £25K.
Production company is happy. They get a programme for £25K + Beanies voice over (someone else writes the script about 80K blah blah). She'll get about £35K. Everyone is happy.
Builders happy. Punter's happy. Production company's happy.
Job's a guddun'.
Just look at the response it's had in the forum.
You've all been had (in my opinion).
I know someone that works in TV - and you'd be amazed how it all really works.
If you think I'm wrong - someone challenge me over the figures - and prove me wrong.
It seems to me tha PL is in it's final throes, and they are just swinging it along for one or two more series. It's not a property show - it's reality TV.

I stand to be corrected on this one, but I had been told that no one gets paid for being on PL - no appearance fee, no assistance with the cost of the renovation, nothing. As far as I was aware the only reason for putting yourself forward was the vanity of believing that you were the one who was going to do everything right and the desire to display this to an admiring public.

Much happens behind the scenes. I know someone who actually works on these types of shows and is sworn to secrecy. If I'm wrong - let's talk figures. Just where DID all that money go?

You may well be right lee and this fact of fixed Telly Programs has not escaped our beady eyes in the past either. He/She should had stuck at being Entrepeneur's(I DREAD to think what they were Entrepenural at) and NOT Property Developers.

And what a load on nonsense that is too.
You can rewire a block of flats for less.
Labour?? What did they do?
Joinery? What did they do?
It's just a lot of daft figures inflated to make spectacular TV.

Lee, you asked where the money went so I pointed you to a link. Whether or not it was value for money is another matter entirely and one which I'm not arguing about.

I'm glad to hear it. They look like figures just made up to reach a total to me.

PL is great telly - 'nuff said.
It's great if you want a laugh, as they always pick muppets who don't have the first clue about property developing & have lots of weird & wacky ideas. Cue lots of people shouting at their TV sets, coming on the C4 homes forum to chat about it, people in the office talking about it next day, people turning in next week to see what happens, big ratings for C4, etc.
But it's also a great source of advice, albeit in a fun way. Beeny actually talked a lot of sense last night regarding the listed building regs - poor old Mr Entrepreneur obviously didn't have a clue what he was letting himself in for buying a Grade II - & even if one would-be developer out there learns something from Beeny, it's all been worthwhile.
If they showed an ordinary couple taking in every bit of Beeny's advice, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun to watch, would it?
Just wish they'd pointed out the obvious though. As with the property on Selling Houses last week - one of the major disadvantages of the Sudbury house was the fact that it was clearly on a main road with no parking anywhere near. Funny how no-one mentioned that?!
