I'm writing a feature for Period Living magazine about people who are escaping the rat race or urban life in return for a place in the country or abroad. The property must be old and I need people in their 30/40s who are in the process of or have taken the plunge in the last few years. But I'm interested that you view this "dropping out of the rat race".
It seems to me more and more that giving up your job and buying a property to do up (wherever) is just a different sort of "rat race" .
It seems increasingly to have stresses, and issues of status, one-upmanship and competitiveness too - just different sorts
I agree. We "escaped" to the country 29 years ago, and for the last 16 years, I've run my own business from home. It's great not to have to commute, and with all that the internet and computing can now do, we'd all be a lot better off if more people worked from home and saved wasting half their lives driving to and from work. I would also take issue with the idea of "escape". In fact , living in the country often means living even further away from work, which makes it an even bigger rat race.
If only rads would fix themselves or alarms not decide to go off for no apparant reason. I too would flee the rat race and move to the country. Until somebody invents a robot...I think I'm stuck in the city.
