Theoretically a Close is a purpose built dead end road (the difference between a cul-de-saq and a a road I don't know). A road is just a road. An avenue is a road with trees planted on both sides. A terrace is a row of houses all stuck together - a road called something or other terrace would certainly have terraced housing on. Grove I should imagine would be used for something in a leafy location - but that's just a guess!

There's an estate near where we live, where every road is the name of a tree, followed by 'grove'. It's a 1960's council estate with lots of concrete and speed bumps, and 'no ball games' signs. There's not too many trees.
There must be origins of why it started but those origins have become skewed so developers just call their estates what they want. There's usually some sort of theme.
Where i lived in a small estate consisting of one road with 3 cul de sacs off that road was a 'Drive' and the cul de sacs were all 'Groves' and all were named after rivers. Derwent, Avon, Tern and Eden. Is Eden a river? I could be getting that wrong there!
