Looking for some advice.
Went yesterday and got B&Q to mix me up two shades from the one coloiur card with the idea of painting the hall dwnstrs and upstrs the lighter colour and the stair wall the darker.
Got home and the darker paint was def not a match to the card, however the lighter card was correct. Took it back to B&Q last night and they agreed and refunded the dark paint but the girl said I would have to keep the lighter shade as it was correctly mixed.
My point was that I had bought them to go together and now I was left with the light shade only which I no longer wanted as I had no dark shade. She said that as the paint was not faulty they would not refund.
I intend to go back this evening and try and speak to a a manager as I am not happy but would you say I am entitled to a refund?

Won't they have another go at mixing the lighter shade that you want. This happened to us a few years ago and the second attempt was fine.

I think that this is their policy when it relates to something that it "made to measure" so to speak.

Did you not get sample pots before hand?

They never offered to remix and were trying to streer me to shades I don't like so I just took the refund.
No I never took tester pots as I feel they are a waste of money as long as the paint comes out like the car, I had one mixed two weeks ago and it was perfect, maybe I got a little too confident about the whole paint mixing thing Frown

I think they are right. You got one paint mix that was correct and you used it. You got one which was wrong, and you opted for a refund rather than a re-mix.

It's a shame, but it's a risk you take when you don't try a sample first.

I'm clearly missing something here. Why not just get them to remix the one which was incorrect? Get them to check the colour before they put the lids on - they do it right in front of you anyway, don't they?

Right then, as a B&Q Manager (Yes really) I would be inclined to re-mix the darker shade to an exact match of the colour card. If there really was an issue with the formula of the original mix then I would refund you on both of the paints. A sample pot is always a good bet, and £1.97 in the scheme of things isn't that much. But if it was a genuine fault then surely you would just want a match to the darker shade, which I am sure B&Q could achieve for you.

got my refund! The manager was very nice about it and agreed to refund the money as I bought one to match the other and they were unable to mix to the shade I required.
They never at any point asked if I wanted to have the darker shade remixed so my guess is it would have done it again as there was a fault somewhere?
Anyway got my money and am looking for a new colour scheme again Roll Eyes oh joy!

Ah but ..... - we went the tester pot route (earthern cream no3). They have three(?) base shades - light, medium and dark from which they mix / build up your colour. They mixed up my tester pot then said they didn't have any light so they have mixed it with the medium so it will dry darker then the colour we wanted.

Does that make sense? The tester pot wasn't even mixed right so when we went and got the 'real' paint made with the light base, it definatly was lighter than the tester pot colour. Still a nice colour but what a waste of money getting the tester pot.
